Here's a quick thought about atheism.

So, what exactly is atheism? Is it a belief in nothing? Is it the realism of modern times or the abandonment of old traditions and customs? For me, atheism is basically believing in myself as a human being and member of society. It's believing that we're responsible for a lot in life, and that this isn't influenced by some powers looking down on us from Mount Olympus. Religion isn't all bad. It brings moral values, cohesion, restraint, and a sense of community. But people have tried religion. We remember the dark centuries, the greed, the hatred, and the immense selfishness of religions. I don't think you have to say you're religious if you believe in higher things, fate, or predestination. But never lose faith in yourself or your ability to chart your own course. Atheism reflects that for me.

28% of Americans are now religiously unaffiliated. A new study from Pew Research looks at how atheists, agnostics and those whose religion is "nothing in particular" view God, religion and morality.

Not a new article, but I find it reassuring sometimes knowing how many people identity as not having a religion.

I want to welcome everyone. I'm new to Lemmy and figured I'd start with like minds to form community. I'm also on Bluesky and Mastodon. My intro: I'm an author and bit part actor. I live between Dayton and Toledo, in the middle of sticks and pebbles. Big on human rights.
