Everything to do with the USA's own Imperial Backyard. From hispanics to the originary peoples of the americas to the diasporas, South America to Central America, to the Caribbean to North America (yes, we're also there).

Post memes, art, articles, questions, anything you'd like as long as it's about Latin America. Try to tag your posts with the language used, check the tags used above for reference (and don't forget to put some lime and salt to it).

Here's a handy resource to understand some of the many, many colloquialisms we like to use across the region.

"But what about that latin american kid I've met in college who said that all the left has ever done in latin america has been bad?"

Negro Matapacos (“Cop-Killer Blackie”) was a famous stray dog from thestreets of Santiago who joined student protests across the city from 2010, and in particular during the 2011 movement for free education.

he was a stray dog from the streets of Santiago, and began joining student demonstrations in 2010. The following year, one of the biggest social movements since the fall of the military dictatorship began, fighting for free education and against neoliberal reforms to the education system.

Negro Matapacos was then seen regularly at every demonstration, defying tear gas and water cannons and always barking at or attacking only the riot police, and never any students or rioters. He subsequently continued to appear sporadically at future demonstrations, and hung out on university campuses, becoming beloved to student and radical movements as a symbol of resistance to violent authority.

His last days were spent resting with people who took him in, with a crowdfunded veterinarian.

Some people who knew him sent us some of their memories of him, telling us how he defied tear gas and water cannons, and only ever barked at or attacked police officers, and never students or rioters.

After his death, his legacy lives on in songs, street murals, an award-winning documentary and in the memories of all those who knew him. He was a good boy.

Decided to play the demo for The Last Train because it looks like an interesting game, RTS + train. First plot point is "ebil gommies killed a miller and burned down the mill for no reason other than they're ebil"...

Really disappointing because it otherwise does seem like a pretty good game sadness

Also the characters have ideologies and nationalist is described as "Values freedom, personal responsibility, and independence. Supports decisions that make the nation stronger."

Finally started using Linux as my laptop's daily driver after I got fed up with how slow windows was running on it. Literally smooth as butter now.

reddit-logo suspended my account again, it's too spicy for election season when someone asks if it's ok to shoot cops for being in neonazi organizations to respond with, "please do"

America deserved 9/11, and in fact in my opinion got off very lightly, all things considered.

Apparently only like 5% of ADHD people who attend college graduation compared to 35-45% of general pop. Now, those general pop numbers are appalling, it should be 100%, but FIVE PERCENT? Dear sweet... uh... Minerva? I forget who is in charge of education. Probably one of the muses. But either way, if that number is accurate, I haven't found a hard source, but if that's accurate it lines up perfectly with my experience of receiving fuck all in the way of meaningful accomodations for ADHD. I did graduate and it was grueling and miserable, year after year of stress that lead to prolonged periods of severe depression, countless withdrawals, fails, and incompletes. I made it by the absolute skin of my teeth, just barely pulling the C GPA I needed to make it out.

you can tell that the west is infested with latent fascism because when benito mussolini showed up in the Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny, nobody said "we should all kill this guy". no, they teamed up with him to fight chuck norris. which, fair, that guy sucks, but it's mussolini. you shoulda prioritized him at least.

My own perception of my "self" feels inconsistent enough to me that I don't even feel like I can conceptualize a fully coherent self anymore. Yet while experiencing these inconsistent states, more often than not they're still undifferentiated enough to be impossible to clearly discern. This is unsurprisingly rather distressing. Is this just what happens when you think about your self too hard? tetsuo-brainrot

comrade-raccoon meow-tableflip

Raccoons scared my kitties :(

I wish all the critters could just get along and let me give them snacks, I might have to speed up the timeline of getting the semi-feral foster kittens indoors full time, I get worried sick about anything happening to them

They have a secure hideout under the house that anything bigger than them can't squeeze into and they're very fast and alert if there's a threat they need to run from but I still worry too much, they're just lil' guys still

Slept terribly, had some weird dream where I was being hunted by this dude that could teleport into unworn clothes and was trying to kill me I think? At one point he did a wall jump towards me and then teleported and the clothes just fell to the ground in front of me and I woke up.

How much damage do you think is required to make super Mario shrink to small Mario? Like, if he stubs his toe is that a loss of the power up?

Just saw someone tweet a link to a textbook pdf on github. I just hope twitter is no longer big enough that this draws attention, but it's so easy to find textbooks on github and I hope linking to stuff on social media doesn't ruin that. We had a good thing going waltuh

With Dems you get the real chance of WW3 (turns out Kamala is just as imperialist as Biden behind all the quirky brat summer shit) and with Trump you get handmaids tale. It’s super telling how liberals have one clear choice, despite the fact that minority groups have been living a handmaid’s tale for decades upon decades

I have an idea for a hexbear movie night theme. I was inspired by learning (after a ridiculous wikipedia rabbit hole that started with this amazing video about the history of the trash anime Eiken) about the little-remembered movie A Bridge Too Far, a 3-hour war drama about the British WW2 war plan Operation Market Garden.

Unfortunately for that film, it debuted three weeks after Star Wars.

It's a friday night in summer of 1977. You and your friends are at the theatre. What do you decide to see?

I rest my case.

So what if we were to get a list of the top box-office grossing films of each year for the past 50 years or so, and watch a movie that opened against them? No other criteria. Just a list of movies that ran into the commercial-success-buzzsaws of other movies.

I got another compliment on my nails today, this time from a cool goth lady. Every time I text my Dr. Partner to tell them someone appreciates their work

I keep getting real faint and vomiting and I'm worried it's some sort of deficiency. im-vegan and suck at eating - maybe I'm not getting enough of something and my body is just now noticing?

Anyways I have a doc appointment coming up already for blood work - anything else I should ask to tack onto my hormone stuff?
