If it's referenced in the early seasons of The Simpsons, it is timeless.

[–] son_named_bort@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

They're Dogs! And they're playing poker!

[–] SeaJ@lemm.ee 27 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I never thought of it in velvet. That adds a whole new dimension to it.

[–] Melatonin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 year ago

Always velvet, baby πŸ‘‰

[–] watson387@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 year ago

It's gotta be velvet yo

[–] Dad2DnA@lemmy.world 26 points 1 year ago

My grandpa had this exact print hanging in his garage. I always loved it, wonder where it went...

Great for a well placed reference in a show or comic.

[–] cmhickman358@thelemmy.club 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Fallout: New Vegas also had a reference to this in the Old World Blues DLC

Serious Sam: TSE has a secret with it too, and they are like 10+ years apart.

But just for boomers and maybe Gen X?

[–] spittingimage@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

This is what we had instead of memes.

[–] watson387@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 year ago

Maybe? Gen X and I'm all over this. XD

[–] reboog42@sh.itjust.works 19 points 1 year ago

I have a poster like this, but they are playing magic the gathering.

[–] XTornado@lemmy.ml 16 points 1 year ago

My family has had many dogs over the years. I've always wanted to have one of these made with each depicted, but they're playing Uno.

This, along with velvet Elvises (Elvii??) are peak art.

Edit: Autocarrot doesn’t like elvii.

[–] Melatonin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 year ago (2 children)

That's because Elvises is correct. And yes, velvet Elvises too.

How would you pronounce that?

Unless they are different Elvises, then it's Elvi. Presley, Costello

[–] Nemo@midwest.social 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

As a Latinist, neither do I. It should be third declension, so the plural would be ElvΔ“s.

[–] Nemo@midwest.social 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

need at least two to be plural

[–] novibe@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago

I fixed it just for you. For no one else.

My brother had this hanging in our room when we were kids lol.

The background was green though.

I'm always hoping to find an old one at a flea market or yard sale. It'd be my most prized possession. Edit: Gen X, just to add context.

[–] toasteecup@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

I'd gladly have it in mine, gen y

Just one more day and it would have been gone forever.

[–] Mostly_Gristle@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

Somewhere in storage I have a tapestry of dogs playing pool.

[–] spittingimage@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

You've reminded me that now I have a man-cave, I want one of those paintings to hang in there.

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking, but the game Psychonauts from 2002 has a reference to this kind of thing.

In one of the minds you go into, there are a group of dog characters that represent that person's subconscious psyche. After you finish the level, you can go back and find the character who's mind you're in playing poker with his subconscious dogs. The level is even called Black Velvetopia, and the character is looking for certain playing cards.

I have a print hanging on my bedroom wall! It’s a very interesting picture.

[–] d3Xt3r@lemmy.nz 4 points 1 year ago

I remember seeing a reference to this in a Cartoon Network ad - except they had all the famous cartoon dogs like Scooby Doo, Huckleberry Hound, Mutley etc. I always looked forward to that ad as a kid, thought it as pretty cool seeing all my favorite cartoon characters hanging out and stuff.

[–] Juujian@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I have very vague recollection of it being relevant...

[–] Black_Gulaman@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Our neighbor had a carpet depicting dogs playing poker hanging on their wall. Not these exact ones but a different group. That was 30 years ago.

[–] Thisfox@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 year ago

Yes, for some reason it was always painted/woven in "velvet" of all things, so I can see why people think of it as carpet.

[–] magic_window@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

got one in paw patrol, but cats.

[–] luthis@lemmy.nz 1 points 1 year ago

No idea why, but I have always hated this. Anyone else in the same boat?
