This is nice and all, but couldn't they instead make an arbitrary UI change to the camera app again? I'm almost to the point where I'm using that app with muscle memory again.

[–] _Citizenkane@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

Yeah, wtf were they thinking when they reversed the sides of the screen the photo gallery and front/back camera switch were on. It's been the same since my Pixel 1. Why?!

The forecast delightfully animates in

There is nothing delightful about unnecessary animations on my phone.

[–] cole@lemdro.id 3 points 10 months ago

animations are so pleasant. if you don't like them turn them off in dev mode, don't kill it for the rest of us

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Couldn't agree more. It's visually distracting and a legitimate accessibility issue at its worst. It should always have an option to disable or at the very least reduce them.

There is a phone wide developer option to reduce animations. It's one of the first things I enable cause it makes the experience less distracting and faster across the board.

There is also a setting under accessibility to turn off animations (at least on my phone--a Pixel 4a w/5g). It is in the color and motion section.

Thank you for the article. Once they mentioned that it was posted by the weather app I was able to disable the weather app and finally turn off this stupid bull shit.

I cannot think of any reason why a CLOCK app would have non CLOCK features and not have a god damn settings option to disable the WEATHER in my CLOCK app

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 3 points 11 months ago

You need to be glad that they haven't killed the clock in favor of the calendar yet.

Google Maps now has weather.

It's baffling.

[–] lukecooperatus@lemmy.ml 6 points 11 months ago

Yeah what possible relevancy to getting from one place to another could the weather have?

[–] Codilingus@sh.itjust.works 2 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Too bad Google Weather only works with GPS turned on...Sure would be nice to use the default, baked in weather app by just telling it my zip code.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Its google so they are trying to find new ways of getting data

It's even worse. It only works based on your IP address. If you sit behind a VPN it shows you the weather data of your VPN's server location... You can add custom locations, but you cannot default them to be used within the little weather widget. So it keeps showing me the weather and temperatures somewhere in Sweden, which are vastly different from the ones here in Germany. It's completely idiotic and I just don't understand why this is a thing.

Huh, that actually kind of makes sense. Why use GPS which is for pin point accuracy and was developed by NASA, when you can just get an approximate location based on IP address. You only need to know the weather for your area, not your exact house. I don't know the inner workings of android's "location" function though, just that there are different levels of it.

Edit: still shitty about the outcome though, and that VPN breaks the feature for you.

My IP shows a city 100 miles away from where I am

I hate the UI for alarms. It looks really disgusting...

I mean, what the actual hell? It had a nice, simple slide UI... Why Google?
