“The People are no longer afraid” was the cover of one of the newspapers published on the 12th of May of 1974. On April 25, 1974 a coup carried out by the Armed Forces Movement (MFA), in disagreement with the colonial war that had been going on for thirteen years in Mozambique, Angola and Guinea, put an end to the Portuguese dictatorship, which lasted 48 years under the direction of Antonio Salazar and under the leadership of Marcelo Caetano (after 1968).

Thousands of people immediately left their homes, against the appeal of the military who led the coup – which insisted on the radio for people to stay at home -, especially in Lisbon and Porto, and it was with the people at their front door, shouting "death to fascism”, that the Government was surrounded in the Quartel do Carmo (Barracks of Carmo) in Lisbon; the doors of the prisons of Peniche and Caxias were opened for release all political prisoners; PIDE / DGS, the political police, was dismantled; the headquarters of newspaper of the regime, The Age, was attacked and the censorship was abolished.

The Portuguese empire would fall later in 1974, after mobilizing nearly two million forced workers (in the mines in South Africa, cotton plantations in Angola, among others) and a 13 year war – 1961-1974 – to prevent the independence of the African countries of Angola, Cabo Verde, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau. Having been built to increase the profit of monopolies, as well as to discipline the workforce, the Portuguese dictatorship fell in the hands of the workers in April of 1974. A significant part of the property owners had to flee the country after the nationalizations which were meant to put an end to the workers’ control, which had become generalized starting February of 1975, especially in the banking sector, large metallomechanical factories, etc.

The ankylose structure of the empire – as well as that of its Bonapartist regime – led to the most important social rupture in post-war Europe – so great was the rupture and the length of it that no historian to this day has managed to determine how many workers’ meetings happened during the week after the coup by the MFA because there were hundreds, maybe thousands, and countrywide.

I just learned a kinda hard piano-based pop song accompaniment! (In the correct tempo, without stopping, while singing it!) And I can kinda transpose it to other keys.

I know that might not seem like a big deal, but as someone with a weird history of playing piano but never mastering it, it's pretty amazing.

Curious what proportion of the absolute dimwits from business school that passed through the math tutorial center work in management consulting now

I find it funny that James Lindsay's doctoral dissertation has like 10k downloads from people hate reading it. If anyone is reasonably comfortable with math feel free to check it out. It's really funny, at best it's a literature review you do for a master's lol.

He states the binomial theorem and the statement is kinda clunky. Like you could argue it's strictly speaking not wrong, but it's just surprising to see in a dissertation.

It’s kind of surprising how much time he spends defining things at the start. Like, I feel like you don’t need to define \mathbb{N}? That one seems pretty obvious.
But yeah, it’s not short, sure, but the fact this was deemed worthy of a whole PhD?? Come on now

I think a lot of templates for theses have a "notations and definitions" section, so feel like everyone first master's draft defined the natural numbers, but it's the adviser's job to cross out that nonsense.

you love to see an episode where a medieval ruler's ideology is seemingly carried out in a consistent way: Mahmūd of Ghazna shitting on the citizens of Balkh for defending his own borders because it was his & his soldier's job, and they're supposed to serve rulers/soldiers, even if they're foreign. and later Mas'ud after Dandanaqan gives permission for officials to go over to the Seljuqs because they demonstrated themselves stronger

lmao what the fuck were you guys smoking fuckin class solidarity between medieval strongmen

Am I just an inherent hater? I can’t seem to get aboard any of the soypoint-2 origins of the universe stuff because it seems no different from asking whether we live in a simulation

I wish I was a bit smarter because I have a feeling as though there is some zizek in questions of science and progress as well

Helldiversposting

Kinda want to make a cyborg propaganda radio that plays, like, the Internationale and Daft Punk but it's all raw binary.

People finding rando students who don't know about Palestine at the protests and are somehow thinking "waow chinese hamas tiktok is making the kids antisemitic" instead of "we're cracking skulls of kids that are literally just chilling". Like im sure there's a chunk that are there because it's an on-campus social thing, which actually goes very strongly against the narratives that the protests are violent and anti-semitic.

Might check out Manor Lords to see if I can scratch the city sim itch I have even though it's not purely a city sim.
