I'm sorry to say this but, they probably restored all of your posts too. It will just say "deleted" as your username but the posts and comments will be in their old place.

That's beyond fucked up.

But also very predictable.

I think it's safe to say this fiasco isn't going anywhere without a class action lawsuit or something.

We need deliberate efforts to archive everything efficiently.

We also need a way to decouple everyone's personal info from publicly available information about them, keeping in mind that not all publicly available information is intended to be that way.

Storage ain't cheap and it definitely ain't infinite.

This is a way harder problem than "the internet" being a bit more mindful can solve easily.

Not to absolve any companies from responsibility or anything.

Really? What kind of lake are they now? Oh, meteor lake.

Remind me when they are at "toxic waste lake" or "out of lakes, sorry"

Not only nobody "earns" that much money, nobody should have the right to command the amount of influence that kind of money provides.

We are literally talking about FIVE people fucking with the lives of the entire planet.

Even if you add the active politicians of every country on earth, it would be a minuscule number of people controlling the lives of eight billion of us, and the most frustrating part of it is that vast majority of that eight billion thinks this is normal, or even should be encouraged.

What do you call someone who doesn't call themselves a programmer in any capacity but has enough programming skills to make things work when he needs things working for non-programming-focused things like automation for material science experiments?

I am that.

Absolutely agree.

I believe this was reddit's intention at least in part. People who care were also those constantly exposing their anti-consumer practices and greedy policies. I'm inclined to believe the administration will be pretty glad, at least for a while, that those who get what's happening are gone.

I'd suggest adding something like "even though you can access the content on other instances, the user experience will differ depending on which instance you sign up for".

A good analogy would be using Facebook vs Twitter but being able to follow and post content cross platform from either of them.

One will not look and feel like the other, but they will let you read and reply to content from the other one.

For good measure add in reddit, hacker news, and discord in there too to help people visualize.

It's also important to give people a few clear instance examples to check out, but you already did enough of that I think.

Holy moly, that's insane!

I do all of those things too because why wouldn't I?
Is there anything as to the outcome of the arrests? Also what was the reason in the first place for the police to be interested in these people?
