Some modern cultures frown upon even the slightest and argumentative critique. As a result, any dialog now is praising. Kids are not that cynical and lying yet and don't like this kind of hypocrisy. This behaviour is just the residue of honesty. But worry not -- in a few years they will learn to keep their opinions to themselves and will wear those permanent smiles on their faces.
