I think one depressing example is innovation in weapons and other dangerous fields. "If we don't build it, someone else will first" is unfortunately historically been shown to be true, has it not?

Did you know most consumer inkjet printers use either a piezoelectric crystal or a tiny heating element in each print head to produce small, consistent ink droplets?

I didn't!

So I tried cleaning my mom's printer heads with rubbing alcohol. Which unclogged them! And then promptly set the printer on fire after being ignited by the heat and/or sparks.

My family will never let me live this down.
