This is the episode where voyager is fractured into different time periods, some in the past, actually most in the past, and one in the future, each located in a different region of the ship, with Chakotay being able to move freely between the time periods. He's trying to return the ship to a single timeline, recruits past Janeway to help him (with some dialogue essentially foreshadowing Endgame), and manages to do so after dealing with Seska, who's on the ship in her past time period, causing some trouble.

It's a nice episode and a good way to do a sort of flashback/clips episode but also develops some nice Janeway-Chakotay character.

At the end, when things have been restored, Chakotay tells Janeway that he can't tell her what happened because of the temporal prime directive. Janeway then reveals that she knows where Chakotay's secrete stash of cider is located, which was revealed to past Janeway earlier in the episode. Chakotay asks how she knows, and she says she can't reveal because of the temporal prime directive.

The whole thing is done as light banter ... but, are we supposed to take this seriously and understand that past Janeway actually remembers her conversations with Chakotay during their movements between the time periods? It makes sense that she would, as both her and Chakotay were given a treatment that enabled them to cross the time fractures without being erased. If Chakotay retains his memories, shouldn't past Janeway have also?

If true, then in the timeline Chakotay finds himself in, Janeway has known the whole time of the rough plot of the whole voyager series up to season 7. Which would be a huge statement, especially if it's that same Janeway(s) in Endgame. You have to remember that this past Janeway was from before they even got to the Delta Quadrant. Awkwardly, as the whole crew is eventually enabled to cross time barriers, many of them from the past, including Borg Seven, they'd all have some memories of what's to come (though arguably not nearly as many as Janeway).

The only argument I can think of for why past Janeway wouldn't actually have retained her memories is that the ship was restored back to the time of the cause of the fracturing, which was an anomaly of some sort in Chakotay's time, and which Chakotay prevented from happening, and so altered all the timelines affected by the fracturing. Having not thought this through enough, I'm not sure how much sense that makes, or should make. But still, why Janeway's comment at the end ... the only on-screen way she could have of knowing about the secret stash is by retaining her memories as past Janeway.

Hi all, my first post here. There wasn't much online about the Starship Creator games (1998 and 2000) except people saying they're boring, but I've played it on and off for 25 years and I think there's a bit more to it. I wrote a deep dive into it, tried out everything like importing my ships into Dominion Wars.

It turns out the missions in the game were created badly which is why people think the game sucks, so I ended up writing a part 2, writing custom mission scripts to try and create as many choices, multiple endings and ways to tackle the story as possible. Immersive sim is a bit tongue-in-cheek but it can do an impressive amount.

Well written missions can really be like mini episodes of the show, so I think it deserves a bit more credit than it ever got!

This is good news for assuring that SNW’s 3rd season production will move ahead after the strike.

Greenlighting a couple of extra episodes and a 4th season would make strategic sense, but I’m just not willing to give Paramount the benefit of the doubt on that.

For those not already aware, Michele Stokes a fan in the UK raised over $US 1200 through a GoFundMe to pay for a skywriter with a #SAVESTARTREKPRODIGY banner.

It flew midday today in LA. The ScreenRant article captures much of the social media including a few videos, and the reactions of the Hageman Brothers and @GoodAaron@startrek.website.

Michele Stokes is also the fan who started the change.org petition to Save Star Trek Prodigy. It’s been progressing slowly since it surpassed 30k signatures during SDCC, and is very close to 33k now. If you haven’t signed and are willing to deal with the platform (which is now monetized), Prodigy could still benefit from your support.

For a while now I have been wanting to play old episodes of TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT in the background in Spanish during the day to passively brush up on my Spanish.

Paramount Plus doesn't offer these shows with Spanish audio in the US, which is very odd considering that the US has the second-highest number of Spanish speakers in the world. I also tried getting a Mexican Paramount Plus account and VPNing in, which worked for a little while until they removed all older Trek content from Paramount Plus in Mexico.

I'd really hate having to resort to DVDs and/or BluRays, but at this point that looks like my only option. Before doing that, I thought I'd ask here and see if anyone has any other recommendations.

In the days of the NX-01, how would one become an officer?

There is no Starfleet academy, and I can't recall a discussion of any person from earth attending a university (apart from Archer referring to Cal, Stanford, and Texas? in Water Polo) and entering laterally through ROTC

I was watching S2 E20 "Horizon", where Travis goes back to his family ship and his mom said they were discussing his joining Starfleet 4 years prior. He had been on the ship for about a year at that point, so was he granted rank based on his experience on his family ship, or was there an OCS school?

Also, after resisting melodic scoring in all the 90s shows, it turns out this was the music Rick Berman liked?!!

And it seems the song does have its own subniche of supporters who share Berman’s view. (But not I.)

Paramount+ splits some episodes like Encounter at Farpoint, All Good Things and Caretaker into two 45 minute long episodes. Does anyone know if the split episodes are missing any scenes?

I'm asking because IMDb says this about Encounter at Farpoint:

"The two-part version, which is the one usually shown in syndication, is missing several short scenes. One scene cut has Riker being shown a recap of the Enterprise's encounter with The Q."

Syndication is not the same thing as streaming so I don't know if Paramount+ is also missing these scenes.

I found this after reading and responding to this post here about early Trek fans' prejudicial negative reaction to TNG. One of my responses (see here) was to point out that any fans of the progressiveness of Trek ought to have been mindful of the room for improvement over TOS, with female representation being an obvious issue. I posed the question "when did Trek start consistently passing the Bechdel test", thinking that it didn't start happening until Voyager, which those hard-line TOS fans would never have allowed to be made (along with TNG and DS9).

And of course, someone's done the analysis with graphs and everything! Awesome! (though note the links to tumblr posts at the bottom that are now behind a sign-in wall ... fun).

The results aren't surprising to me, generally. I expected TNG to do worse, but also thought it did a pretty good job with female guest characters so it might score higher than I thought. DS9, I expected to do better than TNG, which, to my surprise is only marginally true. But I didn't expect, from memory, how much of that is attributable to so many characters breaking off into (hetero, yes even Odo) couples. Voyager obviously does very well. And Enterprise ... well we shouldn't expect much of that ... honestly, for me, this cements the show's status as a blight on this era to lean so masculine straight after voyager.

And of course TOS shows its age, which, surely by 1987, good Trek fans should have been aware of?

Beyond that, I can't help but think of SNW here, which, IMO has a wonderful cast/crew that's well balanced and which I'd expect to be doing well on the Bechdel (as low and superficial bar as it is). But, as it starts to transition into a TOS prequel/reboot (as it is trending from S2 and as the show runners are indicating), all of those TOS characters are going to carry that 60s baggage with them. They'll all be men (Uhura is already there!) and all be special miracle workers. La'an's story has already been sidelined into a Kirk romance. Pelia the engineer was already somewhat substituted by Scotty the engineer. As it goes on (presuming it does), I think it could begin to look awkward once you squint.

EDIT: For those asking about new seasons/series ... I found this page/blog by the author of the parent blog post ... which provides data for some new Trek (Disco and Picard S3 and SNW S1 it seems).

Somewhat notably to me (though only one data point) ... the one episode of SNW S1 that (clearly) fails the test is the one with Kirk in it.

In a similar vein though, while Disco generally does well (best of all Trek so far it seems), the author notes that Season two had the most episodes that were close to the line, because Michael’s arc was so intertwined with her search for her brother, Spock. That is, the more new Trek leans into TOS nostalgia, the worse this gets.

Kev & Rob agree that "Subspace Rhapsody" had its charms, but didn't quite live up to the hype, and that "Bride of Chaotica!" (VOY) is the last time going over the top into silliness was the point of an episode. Finally, as a bonus, Rob re-watched Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and was surprised by how much he enjoyed it!

Looking forward to this ‘Picard’ tie-in novel telling the backstory of how Seven joined the Fenris Rangers.
