These are lists of some tools and software that are useful for Steam Deck and can enhance your experience with it, as well as all the websites and other such Steam Deck resources I know.

I made these lists for the wiki on Reddit's SteamDeck sub and I thought it was a pretty useful to keep around. I wanted to dump them here for everybody to preserve them and to maybe find a new home for this Steam Deck resource.

Let me know what you think.

List of tools and homebrew

Below is a list of tools and homebrew that can enhance your experience with the Steam Deck. Since the Steam Deck offers most things that a normal Linux desktop environment can, tools are included that can be found in the Discover store (including from non-default repositories) and have proven to be an especially good fit.

Emulation and non-steam games

  • BCML Installer for Steam Deck

    BCML (a modding tool voor Breath of the Wild for WiiU) can be difficult to get running on Steam Deck, because it uses an immutable filesystem and the version of Python installed by default is higher than what BCML supports. This script helps people install it.

  • BoilR

    Add non-steam games to your steam library.

  • Emudeck

    This script automates downloading, installing and setting up a large list of different emulators.

  • EmulationStation DE

    A graphical and themeable emulator front-end that allows you to access all your favorite games in one place, which is installed by Emudeck and Retrodeck, but can also be used by itself.

  • Mod Organizer 2 Linux Installer

    This project aims to make modding and playing Bethesda games on Linux as easy as possible. It does that by providing installers which automatically setup a working experience for the user.

  • Retrodeck

    A flatpak application containing a large list of different emulators.

  • SGDBoop

    A tool that automatically applies assets from SteamGridDB directly to your Steam library, removing the need to download and set them manually.

  • Steam ROM Manager

    Steam ROM Manager is a super flexible tool for adding non-Steam games to steam in bulk and managing their artwork assets. It can be installed with Emudeck, but can also be used by itself.

    Copy Steam Games From Your PC to Your Steam Deck SD Card.

  • Disk Usage Analyzer

    A tool for managing your used and free space.

  • Firelight

  • Shortix

  • Deck Screenshot Sync

  • MEGASync

    Easy automated syncing between your computers and your MEGA Cloud Drive.

  • OpenCloudSaves

    Open Cloud Saves is an open source application for managing your saves games across Windows, MacOs, and Linux (including SteamOS).

  • Syncthing

    Syncthing is a file synchronization tool like Dropbox, except that it can work with your own machines and without a server. This can be very useful for keeping non-Steam and emulator save games in sync or backed up.

    Alfae is an experimental project to launch GOG/Local/ItchIo/Epic/Bottles Games in an organised fashion. Also can add games to deck UI.

  • Bottles

    Runs Windows software on Linux with Bottles.

  • Heroic Game Launcher

    Heroic is an Open Source Games Launcher. Right now it supports launching games from the Epic Games Store using Legendary and GOG Games using our custom implementation with gogdl.

  • Lutris

    Lutris is a video game preservation platform aiming to keep your video game collection up and running for the years to come.

  • NonSteamLaunchers

    Installs the latest GE-Proton and several non-Steam launchers under one Proton prefix folder and adds them to your Steam library. Reddit release post for v2.7

  • Steam Tinker Launch

    Steam Tinker Launch is a versatile Linux wrapper tool for use with the Steam client which allows for easy graphical configuration of game tools, such as GameScope, MangoHud, modding tools and a bunch more. Remote access and game streaming

  • AnyDesk

    AnyDesk allows you to connect to your Steam Deck desktop remotely, like TeamViewer.

  • Barrier

    Share mouse and keyboard over the local network.

  • Chiaki4deck

    Chiaki4deck is a fork of Chiaki, adding features for the Steam Deck. It is a free and Open Source Client for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 Remote Play. It can be used to play in real time on a PlayStation as long as there is a network connection.

  • Deskreen

    Turn any device into a secondary screen for your computer. Streams your Steam Deck screen to a browser on another machine.

  • KDE Connect

    Enables communication between all your devices.

  • Moonlight

    Moonlight allows you to play your PC games on almost any device, whether you're in another room or miles away from your gaming rig.

  • NoMachine

    Like AnyDesk, allows remote desktop connections to your Steam Deck. Disabling read-only on the filesystem is required to install, but otherwise works very well.

  • Remote Mouse

    Use your phone as a keyboard and mouse, and copy/paste between devices (apps for iOS and for Android available.) Gained improved support for Linux and Steam Deck in December 2022.

  • Rustdesk

    An open source TeamViewer alternative, remote desktop software. Works out of the box, no configuration required. Use the AppImage from the nightly build.

  • Steam Link

    Connect your Steam Deck or other Steam devices with each other for remote streaming.

  • Sunshine

    Sunshine is a self-hosted game stream host for Moonlight, offering low latency, cloud gaming server capabilities.

  • Unified Remote

    Remote control app for your Steam Deck. Turn your smartphone into a universal remote control, control mouse, keyboard and more.

  • Boot Video Randomizer

    Replace the Deck startup video file with a file of the user's choice. Randomizer provides two features: individual random set and on-boot randomization. Reddit release post

  • CoreKeyboard

    CoreKeyboard is an X11-based virtual keyboard. It has the advantage over Valve's built-in keyboard to offer access to special keys such as Ctrl, Alt and function keys.

  • Great on Deck browser extension for Chrome or Firefox

  • Ludusavi

    Backup tool for PC game saves. Here is the Reddit release post.

  • ProtonUp-Qt

    Install and manage Wine- and Proton-based compatibility tools for Steam and Lutris with this graphical user interface.

  • Qbert

    Qbert generates a root overlay where you can install whatever software you need without messing your filesystem. NOTICE: something is broken atm, Qbert is not creating a correct overlay so basically the software is not working as intended.

  • SC Controller

    User-mode driver, mapper and GTK3 based GUI for Steam Controller, DS4 and similar controllers. Steam Deck support added in version 0.4.8.8.

  • Steam Deck SD Card Scanner

  • Steam Deck Utilities by CryoByte33

    Scripts and utilities to enhance the Steam Deck experience, particularly performance.

  • Steam Shortcut Editor

I just started trying to setup two screen using the official dock and the experience has been pretty awful. In desktop mode, I got two freezes while trying to have the displays recognized. Booting with both screens plugged in resulted in no detection. Then after replugging a screen (display port) I only got 640x480 resolution. Second replug I got the 1080p but plugging the second screen either results in a crash, or just now it's not frozen but I only have a black background and the mouse cursor.

Is there some setting to change to improve the situation? Ideally I'd like it to be automatic when I plug the Deck on the dock, especially with valve official dock which costs quite a bit compared to other options.

I'm curious about other people's experience with this

Gyro input broken on HZD? My last playthrough it was working fine, now it seems impossible to make it work. Am I an idiot or did some configuration get broken in the last year? (sh.itjust.works)

I'm trying to configure the gyro to help me aim. I've tried every configuration I can think of, or find online. I'm slamming head into a wall.

From what I can tell, the game now only accepts "steam controller" input. Which means the right joystick isn't actually a joystick, it's a weird virtual joystick, and there's some conversion going on. So when the old methods for getting gyro input are used, ie "as joystick" or "as mouse", the input is completely ignored by the game.

I've tried configuring a fresh controller configuration based on a standard controller, but then the game things I'm trying to use a keyboard and mouse and ignores all controller input.

Now, if I set gyro to "right stick (steam controller logo)", then suddenly the gyro starts affecting the right stick. But instead of being a relative input, as in when I pull the left trigger to aim, use the current gyro position as zero, and all relative movement should be applied to the stick. Instead it is an absolute value, with the movement being relative to the calibrated location of gravity down. So when I pull the left trigger, I immediately stare into the sky.

I think the solution to this is the "auto world tilt" option, but that is only available in the "gyro to joystick" configuration, which of course doesn't work.

Am I missing something completely obvious here? Can someone please guide me in the right direction? I miss gyro aim.

This would presumably let x86 windows games run on ARM hardware.

This is almost certainly meant for the next Valve VR headset, but ARM has so much better power efficiency than x86 that a future ARM based Deck would be a huge improvement to battery life.

VR games that have already secretly pushed Android ARM builds onto the Steam Store are ran via Waydroid (androidARM to LinuxARM)

VR games that do not have an ARM build on Steam (windows x86) are being translated/emulated via ProtonARM and FEX

SteamDeckHQ has also posted a first look, and praises how well the game runs.

The game unfortunately does require a PlayStation network account.

The game has the same PlayStation overlay that's incompatible with Linux, but when playing on Steam Deck the overlay is automatically disabled. Desktop Linux players will need to use the SteamDeck=1 %command% launch option to disable the overlay.

I use Youtube on deck in Firefox with youtube.com/tv in kiosk mode. Works really well, but I noticed even when I have a bigger screen connected I can only watch videos in up to 720p. It doesn't let me select anything higher. Is that a YTTV thing or is there a problem in my setup?

Please mention whether you're on stable, beta, or a different update channel. There's a good chance most bugs on the stable update channel have been fixed already, so anyone on the beta update can let people know if the bug they're facing is already fixed.

I had been using the original version of this intro on my steam deck for a long time, but the background noise of the different shades of black always bugged me, so I removed it. I also thought the video was a bit blurry, so I upscaled every frame manually using waifu2x. It's still not perfect, but looks way better on the OLED model than it did before in my opinion.

This is a counterpoint to this article posted here a few days ago.

Issues with kernel anti-cheat are the biggest barrier to linux gaming being able to play everything, so it's easy to get overly excited about changes to how windows implements it hoping for an improvement. However that last article was probably unrealistically positive about the changes, and this article probably has a much more realistic perspective on what the changes will actually mean.

Is it kinda just common for games to crash to "desktop" on Deck? Had mine about 2 weeks, no matter if it's big, small, or dolphin emulated, games will randomly crash on me, and the Deck restarts itself.

If there's any known general settings that can stop the crashing, that'd be great.

He specifically cited bad battery life on the ROG Ally and Lenovo Go, saying that getting only one hour of battery life isn't enough. The Steam Deck (especially the OLED model) does a lot better battery wise, but improving power efficiency should really help with any games that are maxing out the Deck's power.

I've had multiple occurrences of this lately with programs installed as flatpaks, such as Audacity (audio editor). The updates section might list 3.6.0 --> 3.5.4̀ for a program.

Whenever this happens I usually manually exclude any version downgrades and only upgrade the rest.

¿Can this happen due to security issues? ¿Or because the higher version has become incompatible with something else on my system?

I have a spare charger (uk plug I think?) that I cannot use. I would rather not throw it out, so if someone wants to pay for shipping (from Switzerland) I will send it.

I would also swap it for an EU charger if anyone has a spare.
