I miss the ability to search my saved posts quickly and efficiently to find what I was looking for. I've been struggling so much to find references now.

Or Urbit? I heard USENET might be making a comeback….

Where are the cool places to hang out and deep dive into a topic without the thought police hovering over you?

Hi everyone, I have recently released an update for OpenRed with some of your most highly requested features from my previous post. Thank you to everyone who contributed with requests, bug reports and other comments.

The newly released version 1.1.3 contains Compact mode, Custom swipe actions, Custom home page, Multireddit support and many smaller improvements.

Also, I don't intend to take over this sub :) so I have created r/openred for future discussions and announcements. Feel free to post your questions or ideas over there.

p.s. if you like the app and feel it is deserved, please consider giving it a positive rating in the App Store

On the App Store there is a app called OpenRed, it works a lot like Apollo and is a brand new app that has been in development for a little bit but it shows a lot of promise especially with updates, it’s very clean and useable and I think with more and more updates will be fantastic;

if you haven’t tried it I would give it a shot and see what you think of it, it’s not to the caliber of Apollo at least not yet but it sure beats the official Reddit app by 1000 miles. Also it is completely free to use unless you want to support the creator by buying premium but it isn’t necessary.

Hey ya’ll! I saw a couple comments about this, but ran a search and didn’t see any actual posts. I was able to get the “Open in Apollo” extension working with my side loaded Apollo app. If you need instructions on installing Apollo, search the sub and there are lots of tutorials. Echoing what others have said - having Apollo back is glorious.

For those who like and want the “Open in Apollo” extension back when browsing in Safari, here’s how I did it.

Prerequisite, though obvious: make sure the side-loaded Apollo is the only version of Apollo installed, and that the app is working as intended already. I am on iOS 17.1 and side-loaded Apollo 1.15.11.

  1. Enable the extension in settings by going to Settings > Safari > Extensions > Open in Apollo > Slide the switch on. You may be prompted to allow it to access Reddit.com. If not, go to the next step
  2. Go to google and open a Reddit page, or open any Reddit page in Safari directly - ideally one where you see the prompt to open in Reddit or continue in browser
  3. When on the page, tap the “Aa” icon in the Safari URL bar
  4. Tap “Manage Extensions”
  5. Turn on “Open in Apollo” - if not prompted before, this should kick off the “Do you want to allow Open in Apollo to access Reddit.com?” dialogue
  6. Hit yes and authenticate with Face ID if needed
  7. That should be it!

If I’ve missed anything, feel free to add it in the comments and I’ll try to edit this post with any other fixes or updates.

Original Title: The Reddit app experience just keeps getting worse. Opened a post, the first comment is a Wal Mart ad. Clicked to close and it opened the ad. Took a screenshot and the Reddit app asked if I was sharing the screenshot and recommended I send a link instead. Seriously awful app.

Up until the point that Reddit killed third-party apps, they’ve effectively had to compete with Apollo and similar apps, which in-turn was putting constraints on the extent of bullshit they could get away with in their own app.

Now that the third-party app competition is effectively gone, the enshitification process will accelerate and within a couple of years the site will be completely unrecognisable. I’m predicting that at some point they’re going to roll out a major update that makes the app centred around short videos, with the navigation giving this type of content priority. Over time, they will make discussion threads harder and harder to access, and while they’ll never do away with it completely, they’ll make the UI focused on video shorts, because the board thinks that would put them in the best position to cash in for their upcoming IPO.

Speculative, I know, but I’ve been here since the early days and I’ve seen how the site has slowly drifted away from the things that made it useful, and more towards bandwagoning features from other sites.

Is it just me or has social media become fodder (more than usual)

Reddit hasn’t been the same since the mass exodus. There isn’t anything interesting to read on the front page. (Women of Reddit, what’s your opinion on SeX 😱)

Twitter is filled with content designed to encourage interaction and better its chance to go viral. (Bet you can’t name a colour without the letter ‘e’ 🤣🫣)

Instagram and TikTok is mindless short-form content designed to hold your attention just long enough to sit through ads.

Now would be a prime time for a competing social network to take off. But sadly the Fediverse (and less sad Threads) never took off. It’s a wasteland.

How’s print media looking these days?

Reddit made a change today to mobile that makes it harder to enlarge images. If you click on the image itself it just opens the comments, which will reload the image. So now you have to open it using a little button in the corner of the image, instead of just pressing the image itself. Haven't found a way to change it back. I know it's a small thing but no one asked for it and just makes the official app more shitty than it already is. I miss Apollo...

UPDATE: It changed back now. So either it was just some weird A/B test like someone suggested, or Reddit is messing with me specifically. Both are equally as plausible, I think.

The Reddit app is so shite that today I had to wade through so made sponsored posts, ads, popular near you and you might like posts and subreddits before I could even see a single post in one of my subscribed subreddits that enough is enough. I so miss Apollo

Even in the Apollo subreddit I had to go past 3 ads before seeing the first proper post

I had enough and spez has really screwed Reddit

Thanks all and hope you Reddit gets better
