Review

Welcome to classic film noir… Wait, not quite! “The Stone” is, in fact, a comedy. But none of the signature elements of British dark humor either, instead, it echoes the lively tones of Hong Kong cinema. Still we have our good naive figure, tossed around by tough guys, crooks, and to pair with him an edgy girl-band heroine in a modern take on the femme fatale.

Plot: Special Forces commandos are abducted mid-operation by a mysterious spacecraft and, upon awakening, find themselves prey to a relentless alien race in a fight for survival.

Review: As I’ve said before William Kaufman isn’t capable of making a bad film; even when dealing with a low budget his films look awesome and Osiris is another winner.

In the cinematic family tree of laconic-but-deadly avengers, Clean (2021) is a redheaded stepchild—a film that knows exactly what it’s channeling and doesn’t pretend otherwise. It’s drenched in the psychic fallout of post-‘Nam vengeance fantasies and post-9/11 urban despair. Think of it as a spiritual cousin to You Were Never Really Here or Drive, but stripped of art-house affectation and dipped in the rust-colored grime of a dying city.

A few days ago, someone analyzed why they felt the final steel mill fight in Drunken Master 2 is the best fight scene ever.

Today, we have another suggestion for best fight... and again it's Jackie in the 90s. This time, the ladder fight from Police Story IV: First Strike (1996), nominated by The Action Elite.

When people talk about the greatest fight scenes of all time I always make sure to mention this incredible scene from Jackie Chan’s First Strike. Using a ladder as a weapon (amongst many other things), this is Chan at his absolute peak and it’s amazing he’s still alive after it.

No breakdown or analysis, just the fight scene in all its glory.

Which apparently has its own Etsy merch! :D

An action movie with comedy & horror elements, directed by Sonomura Kensuke, action director of the 'Baby Assassins' movies (see this post), written by Sakamoto Yugo and starring Takaishi Akari, both of the same franchise. Released on digital 2025 July 22nd.

After being possessed by the ghost of vengeful hit man Kudo, college student Matsuoka Fumika agrees to help him finish his quest for vengeance from beyond the grave.

Review

Given his experience in the genre, former martial arts choreographer Kensuke Sonomura’s new feature “Ghost Killer” tackles themes like female empowerment and domestic violence while also showcasing his trademark skills when it comes to fight scenes. At the same time, Sonomura aims to add comedic and horror elements to the story, thus creating a sometimes uneven, but undeniably stylish movie.

A ronin movie directed by Irie Yū 入江 悠.

Kyoto, 1461. On the eve of the Onin War, the capital is a city in collapse. Famine and plague have claimed tens of thousands, with the dead lining the Kamo River, while human trafficking and forced labor thrive under the noses of a ruling class more interested in decadence than duty. Amid this backdrop, a lone ronin named Hasuda Hyoe moves through the chaos. An outlaw by choice, Hyoe relies on his skill and cunning to navigate a broken society—burning down checkpoints, killing corrupt officials, and gradually attracting a ragtag band of drifters and misfits. Among them is Saizo, nicknamed Frog, a starving youth with raw talent in staff combat, whom Hyoe trains into a formidable fighter.
Together with a sword master, a giant with an iron club, and a Korean archer, they plot an uprising against the shogunate.

The first two DVDs I ever bought (before I even owned a DVD player, I had to rent one from my local Blockbuster) were Das Boot and Drunken Master 2.

I think I'll rewatch DM2 before I watch this video.

@Screen_Shatter@lemmy.world 's comment on Uncaged Fury made me rewatch Kung Fury, what a blast! :D

For those who don't know, Kung Fury is a half-hour amazing, hilarious parody of 80s-style action movies and hacker flicks, and 90's beat-em-ups. And the fight against Nazis we all want to see. And even a song from David Hasselhoff!

Kung Fury 2: The Movie (?)

The feature film, starring not only David Sandberg, David Hasselhoff and the rest of the original gang but also || Arnold Schwarzenegger and Michael Fassbender ||, has been trapped in lawsuit hell since production finished in 2019. Will we ever see it? Who knows?

About 6 weeks ago, a 10-minute sizzle reel was leaked, showing highlights of the movie. Sandberg asks people not to view it (I only read that after watching), as it contains lots of spoilers.

If you can't wait or are too cynical to believe the lawsuit will ever be resolved in your lifetime, I've linked the sizzle reel below. It's as much fun as the original Kung Fury, and gives us an idea of what the world is missing. I hope the bloody lawsuits end soon.

"Do you know what a nightmare life is for parents who have lost their children?"

Mainland screenwriter and director Guo Shu Bo, better known by his stage name Wu Bai, began his career with short films and TV dramas such as “Mystery of Antiques” (2018) and “Crime Crackdown” (2021). He also directed “The Big Shot” (2019), a Chinese remake of Ryoo Seung-wan’s “Veteran” (2015), starring Wang Qian Yuan. “Tiger Wolf Rabbit”, also known as “The Road Bathed in Fire” in loose translation from its Chinese title, is his most recent and arguably most successful work to date.

Set in a dusty town in China’s no man’s land, the story follows three characters with troubled pasts who form an uneasy alliance against a human trafficking ring. The first we meet is Cui Da Lu (Xiao Yang), who attempts to take his own life shortly after being released from prison. Before he can go through with it, Zhao Zi Shan (Liu Ye) appears and offers him money to find a certain woman. Instead of following the request, Cui steals Zhao’s car and sets off to meet a woman named Li Hong Ying (Zhao Li Ying), driven by his desperation to find his missing son.
