I got so sick of ASUS, ACER, Lenovo, and others being cagey about releasing a decent 7840U laptop, so I just bought an HP on Sale.

Acer, ASUS, Lenovo, Thou May Ingest A Satchel Of Richards!

I've been eyeing one of these laptops for awhile, but so far the early reviews seem like a big step backwards in battery life. Some examples:

Did the 5800U/6800U have issues like this when first launching, and were they able to improve dramatically with say, later firmware updates? I'm debating more between this and the 7735U or refurb 6800U, where having this 8h+ battery life is the biggest use case for me.

Been looking at buying a Zenbook for general use, with no gaming. Normally I would of went with the 5600H option as It's cheaper but It only has 8GB of ram and It's soldered on. So this 5800H model seemed the better choice with 16GB instead.

Most websites I've seen It on sell It on average for around £700, I've seen the odd rare one for £999.

However on Amazon UK It is £650, and I'd get a further discount of £65 through staff discount, making It £585 total.

ASUS Zenbook 14 5800H

Screen 14.0 inch, 1920 x 1080 px, IPS, matte, non-touch, 1W 400+ nits

Processor AMD Ryzen 7 5800H 8C/16T

Video AMD Radeon Vega 8, 8 CUs, up to 2 GHz

Memory 16 GB LPDDR4

Storage 500GB M.2 PCIe x4 SSD (SK Hynix BC711)

Connectivity Wireless 6 (Intel AX200), Bluetooth 5.0, Ethernet with adapter

Ports 1x USB-A 3.2 gen1, 2x USB-C 3.2 gen2 with data, video, and power, HDMI 2.0, microSD card reader, audio jack

Battery 63 Wh, 100W USB-C charger with quick-charging

I saw ASUS launched a strix variant with an x3d chip, and I found it on their website, but can’t seem to find any information about pricing or release date, or anywhere to buy it. Has it not launched yet or am I just being dumb?

Now finally visible on the PSREF without Googling it.

Can also configure (but not order) it on the website by tweaking the URL:

Unfortunately in the UK it looks like you are stuck with the 300-nit screen if CTO. So that's a hard pass from me unless they update it to add the 400-nit low power variant once it's officially live. Makes the decision of T14s vs X13 easy for me although the smaller footprint would have been nice.

Hey guys! I was going to order the laptop today in the Netherlands however now I cannot even view the laptop on the Netherlands website. Is anyone having the same issues?

Also does anyone have a review on the laptop?

Thank you!

Has anyone tried to get hidden bios settings exposed on this laptop series? Do we actually know there are any?

I have been using the IdeaPad 5 pro for about a week now.

7840HS, 32GB RAM, 1TB config.

First impressions were very good. Build quality feels great all around. No flex or creaking anywhere. I can easily open the lid with one hand, and the hinge feels sturdy with practically no wobble. The aluminum has a matte texture to it, and is very fingerprint resistant. The only thing that gives any indication it's a "budget" laptop is the plastic bezel.

I ordered it with no OS and installed Windows 11 Pro. There was no functional WIFI driver so I had to tether my phone to update drivers initially.

Display looks great. No visible backlight bleed or IPS glow with a pure black image. It has significantly better colors and contrast than my nano IPS monitor. There is an anti glare coating but it seems quite good with no visible graininess to it.

Speakers are mediocre, nothing special, but perfectly fine as far as laptops go. They sound a lot better with Dolby Atmos enabled. Worth noting that Dolby Atmos is not available if you use Linux so it will sound like a trashcan unless you EQ it.

Camera is not good. Perfectly serviceable for zoom meetings and such, so I doubt anyone would find it problematic. The physical slider to cover the lens is nice.

Keyboard feels good. Very tactile and better than I expected.

Touchpad is good, very smooth surface, responsive, and multi finger inputs and gestures work flawlessly. The touchpad clicks are by far the worst thing about this laptop. They work just fine but they somehow feel too hard and slightly mushy. It doesn't bother me much personally since I prefer tap clicking anyway.

Acceleration could not be disabled through windows settings, as it is still present even with "Enhance pointer precision" toggled off, but it can be disabled using a registry edit.

It is reasonably quiet during regular use. For the most part the fans can not be heard at all. Sometimes they spin up to a barely audible level even if there is minimal load.

It might be worth mentioning that I used the laptop for at least 12 hours, and literally did not hear the fans at all until I installed Lenovo Vantage. I suspect it might have applied a more aggressive fan curve, but it could just as well have been a coincidence, and I have no proof either way.

Battery life is decent. I would expect it to last around 8-9 hours of light use, such as web browsing and using a text editor with the screen around 80% brightness. It charges very quickly so plugging it in for even 20 minutes should get you a few hours use. Currently as I'm writing this the battery is at 58% remaining, with 6h 11min expected.

Performance seems to be as expected from 7840HS.

CB r23 multicore: 15209.

Cinebench r23

3DMark Time Spy: 3249 Time Spy Score , 2902 Graphics score, 10103 CPU score.

3DMark Time Spy

Both tested on "Intelligent Cooling" mode with the charger plugged in.

Overall I am very happy with it. With the education discount it's an incredible deal as there is nothing even remotely close spec wise available in the same price range, at least in Europe.

Hi everyone!

I'm currently configuring my new laptop and I'm super happy.

I wanted to do some benchmark just to test temperature and noise, ando also to be sure that they are in line with my hardware (7840hs, 780m, 16gb, 4050).

Do you have some advice for usefull and trustworthy benchmarks?

Hi

I am writing here, because I cannot get the help on the linux sub, so i hope anybody with this laptop and linux installed sees this post.

I just got a brand new laptop Ideapad pro 5 14 inch, and installed Fedora 38.

Everything works perfectly except for the Hz. I should have 120Hz but in the menu it only says 60Hz and I cannot change it.

Does anybody have a similar problem or have this laptop who can help ?

thanks :)

HELP - is anyone experiencing this? I have an Acer Swift Edge 16 (SFE16-43) with a Ryzen 7840U and Radeon 780M.

I returned the first one I got due to abysmally low scores in Time Spy (696) and Geekbench 6 Compute (13,000), these scores are worse than iGPUs from 2020.

My replacement laptop did much better, getting >25,000 on Geekbench 6 Compute. However, now my new laptop is getting 14,000-15,000 all of a sudden. I'm not sure what happened - all I can think of is that I opened the AMD Adrenalin software for the first time and installed my typical apps (e.g Slack, Microsoft Teams , 3DMark Demo etc) - shouldn't mess things up though and I ended all these tasks before running the benchmark). I also set the Windows 11 Power Mode to "Best Performance" and cycled with "Fn + F" to the performance mode for the Acer laptop :/

On the first laptop, updating the drivers didn't help at all, so I don't really want to waste the time to do it here until there are newer drivers.

Has anyone experienced this/found a solution? I posted this on the AMD forums but got marked as spam :')

UPDATE: SOLVED - I remembered another thing I changed was the "Memory Integrity" setting in Win 11, figuring that since the iGPU uses the RAM it might have an effect. I turned it back off, restarted the computer and the Geekbench 6 score is now 29k! I wonder if this is supposed to be the case, or if it's a driver issue that performance halves when the memory integrity security feature is turned on

The T14s Gen 4 AMD has now been posted to the PSREF library. It's not yet for sale but should mean soon.

I'm targeting the X13 Gen 4 AMD but if that doesn't come out soon, I may jump on the T14s bandwagon.

LDLC France had the Zenbook S 13 OLED listed with a 7840U at 1099 €, with 7% discount ( ASUS Zenbook S 13 OLED UM5302LA-LX066W). Good bargain!

I bought one immediately even though it only has 512 GB SSD and 16 GB ram. I checked my order today and they simply removed the product from their store. Weird.

I called their customer service and they explained that they had only a few items and all went in 5 days. Apparently, I bought the last one and they pulled the model from their inventory.

After the Lenovo "debacle", it looks like it's absolutely impossible to get a laptop with a 7840u in mainland Europe (FYI, Asus mentions some availability in the UK and in Ireland).

What is going on? Is it Asus? AMD? Stores with ridiculously low prices?

Has anyone ordered and received their Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Gen 8 (14APU8) laptop yet? I cannot find any third-party reviews of this laptop anywhere and I am very curious to know how it shapes up as on-paper, it looks really good.

There was one user here who did post a somewhat review, but they have since deleted their posts/account which is weird (Perhaps they had a similarly named laptop, realised it and deleted everything).

I have a laptop with Ryzen 4600H and I want to last a bit longer than 4 hours from battery. I know that I can use acpi_cpufreq, amd_pstate and amd_pstate_epp as drivers and also use different governors. Everyone praises the new pstate driver, but I think I must be missing something.

I saw this article with benchmark tests on Phoronix and from the results (and my own experience) it seems like acpi-cpufreq with powersave governors is still the best option to have the lowest battery drain and still have somewhat acceptable performance?

I'm looking to buy the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Pro R7 7840HS 16 inch with 1TB of storage and 32gb ram (83AR0028GE) for music production and audio engineering. The only concern I have is wether the DPC latency is too high for this kind of purpose. I would be really thankful if someone with this laptop (14 inch too) could test the DPC latency with a program called LatencyMon or other programs and send me the results.

Thanks in advance.
