AMD released updated Ryzen Chipset software, version 5.08.02.027. In addition to bug fixes for its various components, the package includes a new component — AMD PMF-7040Series driver.

According to a post under the article, the new driver:

… Looks to be responsible for adjusting power and performance ratios focusing on mobile devices …

SubGroup = {C763B4EC-0E50-4B6B-9BED-2B92A6EE884E}, "AMD Power Slider", "Adjust AMD Power Slider options"

Setting = {38cab4d5-db09-449f-9db5-1c91c909b6d4}, "PMF Controller", "Controls the thermal power solution"

Value = 1, "Better battery", "Enable some AMD power savings feature to increase battery life", %REG_DWORD%, 0x1

Value = 2, "Better performance", "Enable more performance gaining features", %REG_DWORD%, 0x2

Value = 3, "Best performance", "Enable all possible AMD performance gaining features", %REG_DWORD%, 0x3

Hopefully these drivers further improve battery life of the 7040 processors like the 7940HS, 7840HS, 7840S, 7840U and 7640U. Not sure if this release would address Z1 processors as they are also based on the 7040 series.

Maybe someone can report if these drivers do improve battery performance.

It's been a few months since it was made available and the main thing we have to show for it, is the Framework 13 and some weird laptop handheld thing, and a ZBook from HP as far as I can tell.

When do you guys think there is gonna be more product launches with this chip?

The pricing doesn't make sense though. In comparison the Intel 13900H variant with a 4070 is just 100 CAD more.

Was expecting it to start from 1800-1900 CAD

While patiently waiting for the Thinkpad X13 Gen 4 7840u, I googled on benchmarks and found below. I'm a Windows guy but assume the Windows benchmarks will be relatively the same. He said he'll be testing 780m next.

"When taking the geometric mean of the initial 268 benchmarks run on these three laptops, the Ryzen 7 7840U came out to being 23% faster than the prior generation Ryzen 7 PRO 6850U"

First link is to his review. Second link is list of all the benchmarks.

Is it worth waiting or should i just go with 7735hs for 920$. Is it expected that 7840hs would drive up the price massively too? Get that the difference between the 2 are around 10-20%, but is it really that noticable? To me it seems really like i5-13500h in performance

The 7840U version of the Zenbook S 13 just became available yesterday in my country.

The only available config is 512Gb disk and "Refined White" color. The price works out at about US$1050 (including 7% sales tax).

I rather impulsively purchased it, when it really would have been more sensible to wait.

My current machine is a Yoga Slim 7 Carbon 14ACN6, which has a 5800U and a slightly higher weight (1.1kg), and larger screen (14"). My laptop before that weighed 1.2kg and I found dropping from 1.2kg to 1.1kg made much more difference than I expected. So I'm looking forward to seeing how I like this weight/screen size.

Apart from weight, a couple of other things I like

  • 180 degree hinge: I found I made use of this quite regularly on the Yoga, when lying down or reclining
  • USB C power inputs on both sides (I think)

I am a bit apprehensive about the fan noise/heat. My current one is pretty good, so I'm hoping this one won't be a step back.

I shall report back when I receive it.

Going to university, just purchased this the other day. Is this perfectly decent to use for Adobe’s Creative Cloud services? I’ll just be strictly using it for those apps for 2D & 3D art.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a laptop that is cheap and has long battery life?I'm hoping for something that has at least 8 hours of internet browsing and text document editing, for as cheap as possible. I don't care at all about performance. Also no tn or va screens if they are still a thing.

Hi All, basically the title. The newly launched slim Gen 8 seems to be the only one with 7840 hs and 90hz, 2k screen 13-14 in display size range and 32GB RAM in a well.. slim package. It doesn’t look like there’s any competing offering as I checked both ASUS and HP but the zenbook falls short with 16GB Ram and maybe 60hz screen. The HP elite book also has the same specs more or less but with lower resolution too. Is there any competing launches in near term? I wanted to buy zenbook 13/14 because I like Asus numpad and oled but not sure 16gb is enough when soldered. I don’t care for dgpu

I am planning to purchase an HP EliteBook G10.

I am comparing the 845 G10 to the 840 G10.

845 G10 - 7840u

840 G10 - i7-1360P

All specs are the same and prices are roughly 5% higher Intel

Which one do you recommend?

I read it's limited to 4 GB (on Lenovo) which would be kind of disappointing. Is that the max. it can use in games?

At the end of July I ordered the Yoga Slim 7 Gen 8 (14” AMD) with 32GB of memory in The Netherlands. After a day I received an estimated shipping date of August 17.

But I just received an email that the shipping date of my unit has moved to December 7th!

Lenovo website still states shipping within 6-9 business days. Clearly not the case.

Am eyeing the Ideapad Pro 5 14APH8 with 7840HS and 32GB LPDDR5X-6400.

But that's not available in my region, at least not currently. However the Yoga Slim 6 14APU8 with 7840U and 16GB LPDDR5X-6400 is now available for me to purchase.

On paper, what do I lose out on in terms of performance?

For context, I'm currently on i7-6700HQ and GTX 1060 with 16GB DDR4-2133. I want to transition to something more mobile but still capable of doing light 3D work and gaming when called for.

I received my build to order Lenovo Ideapad 5 pro gen 8 14APH8 with AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS / 780M. I picked the version without OS as I already had a Windows license. However after installing Windows and all updates, I see a lot of GPU artifacts, especially in the AMD adrenalin tool on the performance tab. Random small green squares that are flashing over the screen ever couple of seconds. Lenovo vantage says there is no updates available. Installing the 7840hs drivers directly from AMD didn't solve the issue. Anyone else experiencing the same artifacts with their 7840hs laptop or do I have a DOA?

Update: it looked like the problem was gone, but it still persists. Only on battery power though. As soon as I connect the AC adapter there are no more artifacts.

Update2: problem still persists with official driver from lenovo website (instead of newer windows update version)

Planning to get my sis a laptop for school work. She apparently wants one with touch screen. Struggling to see if 7730U is worth $200 more than the 5700U. Use will only be for school stuff like Microsoft applications, we browsing and for video streaming

I'm in Singapore and the 5700U unit specs are as follows at $999 while the 7730U unit is at $1199

IdeaPad Flex 5 14ALC7 | 82R900DASB 14" WUXGA (1920x1200) IPS 300nits Glossy, Glass, Touch AMD Ryzen™ 7 5700U (8C/16T, 1.8/4.3GHz, 4MB L2/8MB L3) 16GB Soldered LPDDR4x-4266 512GB SSD M.2 2280 PCle® 3.0x4 NVMe B FHD 1080p with Privacy Shutter

Hi All,

I just want to give a quick update of this laptop and I will give another update after a week or two:

I have macbook pro touch 2017 i5 13" model as a comparison

Model

Build Quality:

I must say this is pretty solid feel of the metal case. Maybe it is a tiny bit flexing on the left hand side of the touchpad. but the right side of the touchpad is stiff. You can open the lid with 1 finger but at some point it may end up lifting the base. The hinge can be opened up to 180degrees. The hinge cover seems to be made of plastic.

Keyboard feeling: German Layout

Enough travel distance from me but not as good as my old Macbook keyboard. But good enough

Touchpad feeling:

I must say I am not used to slippery touchpad and I kinda like the feel of Macbook pro. So far, I think the best feeling of a touchpad is from a Dell XPS. The touchpad of Lenovo seems to register my movement well. No issue in that, just feels a bit too smooth.

Cooling:

I left everything as default in Bios and I have been playing 4k video on youtube. I have been running this for 10min and the fan still hasn't turned on yet. Very silent.. so far

Default SSD:

512GB M2. 2242: Hynix HFS512GEJ4X112N

Screen:

400nits not glossy, so far I think it is bright enough. I have Asus 34" with 550nits and it is definitely brighter. No built in HDR settings on built-in display but you can stream HDR. Based on other reviewers, reducing the refresh rate from 120 hz to 60hz won't save you much.

  • 14" 2.8K (2880 x 1800), IPS, matte, non-touch, 100% sRGB, 400 cd/m², 120 Hz, narrow bezels.

External Screen:

Horrible so far, I think AMD Adrenalin don't have the correct driver for 780M yet. Therefore, if you use 34" external screen as secondary/main screen. You might/will get a stretched, blurry font and text

Sound:

I am having a mixed feeling about the speakers. If you like the sound of Macbook, then this is a downgrade. I would recommend that you choose Yoga Slim 7 Gen 8 instead because it comes with better speakers and subwoofers. Although, enabling Dolby Atmos might help a bit with improving the sound

Camera:

I think it is quite ok, maybe an improvement compared to my macbook pro touch 2017. You can also enable HDR pro on the default Windows Pro camera app. Less noise in a room light.

CPU:

No comment so far

Maximum is 4GB of RAM. I think this is bios lock because those other handheld console goes up to 8GB

GPU:

No comment so far

WIFI & Bluetooth:

Mediatek RZ616 WIFI 6E. I only have WIFI 6 Router and it sync with 1201/1201 Mbps from the next room. Bluetooth is version 5.2

Weight:

I did not measure it against my macbook touch 13" but I think this one feels lighter. The power adapter is not the smallest but acceptable

Will I keep it?

For 700euro on a brand new CPU and GPU with 32GB of ram. I think the overall package is worth it.

Little fun fact:

This laptop flew from Shenzen China to Thailand and then to New Delhi with UPS. I am not sure why but one thing I noticed is the power brick is made in India. Coincidence?

Here are the specs/configuration:

  • Processor : AMD Ryzen™ 7 7840HS processor (3.80 GHz up to 5.10 GHz)Select upgrade
  • Operating system: Self installation with WIndows 11 Pro through USB
  • Total memory capacity: 32 GB LPDDR5X 6400 MHz (soldered) Selected upgrade
  • Hard Drive: 512GB SSD, M.2 2242, PCIe 4.0, TLC ( I haven't opened the case but it should be compatible with M.2 2280)
  • Screen: 14" 2.8K (2880 x 1800), IPS, matte, non-touch, 100% sRGB, 400 cd/m², 120 Hz, narrow bezels
  • Graphics card: Integrated graphics
  • Camera: 1080p FHD infrared and RGB hybrid camera with dual microphones
  • Color: Arctic Grey
  • Keyboard: White backlit keyboard, storm gray - German
  • Integrated WLAN adapter: Wi-Fi 6E 2x2 AX and Bluetooth® 5.1 or higher
  • Palm rest: aluminum
  • Battery: 4 cell lithium polymer, 75 Wh
  • Power Adapter: 100W Slim USB-C Power Adapter, 90% PCC, 3 Pin - EU
  • Warranty: 2 years Courier pickup or customer mail-in (maximum is 3 years)
  • Weight: 1.5KG

After seeing a lot of post in here and knowing I will need the Universal x86 Tuning Utility I finally find the optimal TDP for this horrible HP model (255 G7) wich is 22W. I want more but is very unstable... I am very bad because there are other laptops out there they can output more than 30W and even 40W with a good performance and in my case even with 16GB in dual channel the performance is 30-40 fps for low presets in 768p... :/
