I saw in a video on YouTube (by Langfocus) that in Indonesian, the word "Allah" is used for God. Could a foreigner use the word to refer to God? Is it respectful to?

Furthermore, what do the words Tuhan and dewa mean?

Can any of these words be used to refer to 'a god'?

I am trouble figuring out when to put these two words in a sentence. I know tidak and Bukan are not’s however, I am uncertain when they can be appropriately applied.

Hi, I have James Neil Sneddon's Indonesian: Comprehensive Grammar reference book. Where can I find more comprehensive learning materials to learn Bahasa Indonesia?

I checked out The Indonesian Way (indonesian-online.com)'s free sample lessons, and I think it's what I'm looking for, but unfortunately I can't afford it. I heard it was free a couple of years ago, too bad I didn't find it before. Do you happen to know any complete materials to learn Indonesian from beginner to advanced (including the colloquial language)?

I found some sites online that kind of take you from beginner to intermediate, with lessons about the colloquial language, but they're too basic and less detailed.

Did you happen to have a copy of the materials from The Indonesian Way from when it used to be free?

I am only about 2 weeks in, but I feel quite disheartened with Indonesian. There are very few resources, and some like Pimsleur, Duolingo feel like a bit of a waste of time given that there are so many dialects of the language.

Indonesians speak very quickly, the words are informal and are completely different to the 'formal' versions. It makes me feel like I will never be able to understand it in conversation.

I've learned Spanish before and I know how hard learning a language can be, but this feels different. It feels like you need to learn two different languages, with little effective resources.

Has any English speaker got any words of encouragement for me and maybe some tips for getting into the swing of things? I feel like I'm bouncing between Duolingo, pimsleur, hello talk and YouTube comprehensible input (of which there are about 10 videos)

I noticed that the most natural way for me to translate what's in my mind from Indonesian to English would be using the passive voice, especially since most things in my mind are more object-oriented.

Si Bambang dibawa ke rumah sakit. > Bambang was taken to the hospital.

For me, who took him to the hospital doesn't really matter—I might not even ask. My questions would be: what happened? Is he okay? Where is it? Can we visit him? Is it serious? Did you/they tell his family about his situation? Who's looking after their children? In English, though, this construction is too formal, and not as natural.

On the contrary, I noticed many people learning Indonesian tends to keep the active/subject-focused syntax:

They took Bambang to the hospital > Mereka membawa Bambang ke rumah sakit.

While it's not wrong per se in terms of grammar, I kinda feel like this sentence shifts the focus from Bambang to "they": who are they? Why are they the ones taking him? Are they the ones responsible for all these? But this is the most natural-sound way to say it in English (cmiiw).

What do you guys think?

AFAIK the longest word in Indonesian is mempertanggungjawabkanmulah (taking responsibility for it). But then, I don't think it's the longest in terms of possible suffix/morpheme.

As someone who's interested in the origin of the words that they learn, this one caught my eye.

According to Wiktionary, lumba-lumba ('dolphin') is a reduplication of lumba/lomba ('race; a running competition'), which is derived from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *lumbəq.

In other examples of kata ganda (specifically, nouns) that I've come across, there seems to be a conceptual link between the singular word and the reduplicated one. For example:

• Abu ('ash') > abu-abu ('grey')
• Langit ('sky') > langit-langit ('roof; ceiling')
• Surat ('letter') > surat-surat ('paperwork')

What's the conceptual link between running competitions and dolphins? Are there any other strange examples like this that you know of?
