See this photo. https://imgur.com/a/xxvKKCU

It's growing and spreading across the wood chipped part of our garden. According to Google Lens it's liverwort, so I've bought Yates Moss and Algae killer, which also lists Liverwort. I've done this twice, but I see very little change. I've also tried generic weed killer.

It's also growing on our footpaths between rocks and that's very hard to get rid off by hand. For other areas I could use garden tools to clear it, I'm aiming to get rid of using weed killers. So it's just for small areas.

Any tips for a weed killer that works on this?

Please note this is just a beta and there are going to be bugs, but it works and it works nicely. Have fun.

I've been looking for some old films to watch online and I'm looking at

  • On The Beach (1959)
  • Patton (1970)
  • The Great Escape (1963)
  • The Guns of Navarone (1961)

Those last two inspired parts of the video game series, Metal Gear Solid. In Metal Gear Solid 3, a lot of films get mentioned by characters throughout the game.

On The Beach is one I heard about because Alex Jones was talking about nuclear war earlier this year, and he showed a scene from that particular film. There's a newer version of On The Beach but I'd always go for the original, or better, read the novel it's based on.

Recently I watched 2 old Soviet films

  • Amphibian Man (1961)
  • Only 'Old Men' Are Going To Battle (1973)

Some links

Patton

The Guns Of Navarone (this one costs $ on YouTube)

Amphibian Man

Only 'Old Men' Are Going To Battle, black and white version

Only 'Old Men' Are Going To Battle, colourised in 2009

It's disappointing that many films are 48 hour DRM'd and cost $4 or $6 despite not being restored

but...

Got to get me some novels too.

The top three stories on Radio NZ are about her, do we really need this much coverage?

I'm looking for a robo vacuum that integrates nicely with home assistant, and ideally no cloud dependency. I don't want to buy such an expensive device that doesn't work when the manufacturer goes out of business or the Internet is down.

Valetudo seems to be the only option. However, even the so called easy installation involves many steps. I'm technically pretty capable as I work in IT, but I'm reluctant to possible brick a device worth hundreds of dollars. FYI more info here https://valetudo.cloud/pages/general/getting-started.html

Would someone be able to assist? Or know a company that provides this service? I'm based in Wellington.

This video doesn't discuss NZ specifically but it does show some pretty interesting patterns that affect us.

TL;DW: Southern Hemisphere is

  • 2C cooler
  • 24% stormier
  • somehow protected from pollution from the north

Well Apollo has shut down so time to get rid of Reddit. I am currently using Power Delete Suite https://codepen.io/Deestan/full/gOQagRO/ to overwrite all of my old posts with some random text, then tomorrow I will run it again to actually delete all of the posts / comments.

Apparently if you just delete they can be easily restored.

Anyone else going down this path?

Hopefully it's okay to ask here, but does anyone have a Calckey invite they'd be willing to share? I'd like to check it out and would prefer a local instance.

If this is the wrong place let me know.

Ok so this is a bit weird out of context, so here's some context.

~~I tried to do some art on the top but it's all the same colour so didn't work.~~ So here is my beautiful art, I call it "A dirty polar bear in a sand storm"

The five people aboard a missing submersible died in a "catastrophic" event, a Coast Guard official says, bringing a grim end to the massive search for the vessel that was lost during a voyage to the Titanic.

"The debris is consistent with a catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber," Mauger said.

Hi lemmings, I switched over from Reddit 10 days ago now but I couldn't find a mobile client that I was happy with with an experience similar to the Reddit experience I was used to. So I decided to build my own and I hope you will like it as well!

Play store link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kuroneko.lemmy_connect

Features:

  • Material U
  • Dark and Light themes
  • List view / Card view / Fullwidth view
  • Filter lists for hiding posts
  • Multiple accounts + switcher across multiple instances
  • Guest accounts for viewing an instance without signup
  • Search and community autofill
  • Markdown support + attempt to navigate links correctly (/u/foo will open that user instead of browser kickout. Same for /c/, !, and @)
  • Saving posts
  • full sort types
  • NSFW view options (hide, blur, show)
  • copy text and url on all posts and comments
  • add comments, replies, and new posts
  • comment replies with line indicators

Here's other screenshots:

Future plans:

  • Improving the inbox
  • Swipe actions
  • Multi-~~reddit ~~communities

Thank you for taking a look. I hope others who are migrating from Reddit like me will find the app useful and I'd love to know your thoughts!

Edit: Community for the app is here: https://lemmy.ca/c/lemmyconnect

The protests get even more creative. PoliticalHumor mods have set it so that if you subscribe to the community you can now do moderator actions through comments.

No more "Landed Gentry" here, just a total shitshow of deleted comments and lack of cohesive moderation.

They can't ban all of us

I asked DALL-E for "A shitpost that could be found on the new zealand subreddit", and this is what it gave me. It's pretty spot on.

The poor spelling is commentary on the state of literacy in NZ, especially following COVID where school kids have missed out on a lot of learning.

"it be fint" refers to how we tend to think "it will be fine" or "she'll be right", but the "fine" has been adjusted to fine't as in it's a contraction if "fine, not" showing how it won't actually be fine. This contracting is further misspelt due to the above literacy commentary.

It's typed not hand written to show how the world has moved increasingly online. The handwritten part at the bottom repeats parts higher up to show that people are becoming less creative.

The fish represents our waterways, and the fish is having trouble reading the text because of the poor state of the waterways causing it to be in poor health.

The fish is orange, like the Orange Guy from the voting ads, and has it's eyes wide open - this shows how the younger generation are "woke" to social and environmental injustice and willing to challenge the status quo.

The lines are all horizontal showing the passage of time, but they never meet showing the generational divide and how values from different generations don't converge.

The coloured squares in the corner represent the range of opinions that divide us despite them being close to each other.

For better or worse, I wrote that. It's not generated by ChatGPT or copied from Time Cube, despite similarities.

Hi all, we have another new mod joining the team.

@cloventt@lemmy.nz has been appointed as a mod of !offtopic@lemmy.nz, and will be starting to look at fleshing out the details of the community.

I know you’ll make them feel welcome :)

I made a comment about how there's such a wealth of knowledge that was available on Reddit that makes it so useful and whilst the cached pages of Google and Waybackmachine (though I've found it doesn't have a copy of a lot of pages I want to view), I have some fear of these disappearing eventually along with people going back and scrubbing their old comments and posts in an effort to remove their content from Reddit and I suppose devaluing the platform as the information stored is pretty useful.

I came across this dump of Reddit submissions and comments from 2005-2022 for the top 20K subs: https://academictorrents.com/details/c398a571976c78d346c325bd75c47b82edf6124e

It says it's about 1.66TB. I haven't downloaded it to have a look at it because I have no space (lol) but I plan to to hopefully preserve and make use of it. When I have time I might write something to index the data so I can search it for what I need.

Just thought I'd share the dump anyway for anyone with similar concerns.
