Jeff Marek of Sportsnet is always going on about how sports are never better than when you're 12. And I agree.

That said, Hockey (at least for me) was never better than in 2012, when I was absolutely not 12 years old.

The Capitals went into Boston with their third string goalie and won with an OT G7 goal. We had that insane Philly v Pittsburgh series that had everything from line brawls to blow outs and even Phoenix went on a run and knocked off the Hawks and Predators, it was so much fun.

After years of feeling alienated by the NHL and campaigning to diversify the sport, Akim Aliu is getting another shot at playing pro hockey, this time with the San Jose Sharks' minor league affiliate.

Sharks general manager Mike Grier informed reporters at the league's GM meetings in Florida on Wednesday he offered Aliu a tryout contract with the American Hockey League's San Jose Barracuda for the remainder of the season.

The 34-year-old Aliu, who plays defence, confirmed the tryout by text to The Associated Press, saying his flight had just landed in California.

"It's huge. I've prided myself on always doing things the right way morally, and never wavered through all the dark times," Aliu wrote. "Extremely blessed to get this opportunity."

I'm not sure what I am most impressed by: (1.) The quality of play on the ice (2.) The sell-out English Crowd (3.) The ability to find every inch of space on the ice and the sweaters to sell advertisements.

Interesting nugget coming out of today's NHL GMs Meeting: A couple managers mentioned that the league has signed on to do a behind-the-scenes series with Amazon that will centre around 10-12 star players.

It's due for a fall release.

They're currently sitting in a wild card spot and are one point back of Philadelphia for the 3 spot in the Metro with a game in hand.

Nothing makes sense.

Konstantin Koltsov, the Belarusian former pro ice hockey player and boyfriend of tennis player Aryna Sabalenka, has died at the age of 42, Russian club Salavat Yulaev said in a statement on Tuesday.

Forward Koltsov played for the Belarus national team in the 2002 and 2010 Olympics and spent parts of three seasons with the National Hockey League's Pittsburgh Penguins from 2002 and 2006.

"It is with deep sorrow that we inform you that the coach of Salavat Yulaev, Konstantin Koltsov, has passed away," Salavat Yulaev, which is based in the Russian city of Ufa, said in the statement.

Koltsov was in the United States (Miami)
