Welcome to lemmy.today!

About us

🤗 Thanks for joining our little instance here, located in Oregon. The idea is to have a fast, stable instance and allow users to subscribe to whatever content they want from here.

😎 We dont block any other instances. We will keep it that way unless it becomes a moderation problem.

🤠 We will be around for a very long time, so you dont have to worry about us shutting down the instance anytime soon. We like performance and stability in our servers, and will upgrade the instance when its needed.

🥹 Make sure to join a lot of remote communities to get a good feed going. How to do that is explained here.

Lemmy mobile apps

You should start using one of these ASAP since the web browser user interface is quite ugly, even with themes.

I originally chose this instance because it seemed to be aimed at people who don't really want to join a specific community. All I can say is I barely ever think about this instance and I mean that as a huge compliment. You guys run a tight ship with almost no hiccups or issues so far. Thanks for keeping the lights on.

On lemmy.today, I don't appear to be seeing posts created in the past two days as of this writing on either !NonCredibleDefense@sh.itjust.works or !Games@sh.itjust.works. I am subscribed to both communities. I have not done an search to determine whether other subscribed sh.itjust.works communities are affected, though I assume that to be the case.

They are visible from lemmy.world, so the posts are propagating to at least some other federated instances.

sh.itjust.works presently appears to be running Lemmy 0.19.5 (versus lemmy.today's 0.19.4 and lemmy.world's 0.19.3). However, I do not think that this is a version-related problem, at least not alone, as !Ukraine@sopuli.xyz is showing up fine on lemmy.today.

https://lemmy.today/instances lists sh.itjust.works as a federated instance as of this writing.

https://sh.itjust.works/instances lists lemmy.today as a federated instance as of this writing.

Lemmy.today has also been responding very slowly to me over the past hour or so, and was frequently showing connection timeouts and gateway error pages when trying to load pages. Other instances appear to be working normally. That may be entirely unrelated, but I thought that I'd mention it, as it's unusual and at least might be related.

Alrightie, so here I am, going for my very own PhD! Getting here was still a lot of stress and I was looking for this moment for a while. Now, finally, it actually happens :)

Hi everyone,

We just had some unexpected downtime due to a disk quickly getting full over night... :/

We will adjust the monitoring to start alerting us earlier for disk space running out so we can actually do something about it.

I took the chance to install the latest OS patches and updates now though since the server was anyway down.

Hope you didnt notice the downtime too much!

As originally conceived, the House was supposed to grow with every decennial census. George Washington spoke just once at the Constitutional Convention — and on its final day — to endorse an amendment lowering the ratio of constituents to members to 30,000.

Today, House members represent roughly 762,000 people each. That number is on track to reach 1 million by mid-century.

Just wanted to say hello to everyone new joining the instance lately. Seems like reddits ideas of introducing paywalled subreddits got a few more people to think twice about using that site.

I just wanted to encourage new users to install a good mobile client for Lemmy. The web interface is OK but the mobile apps really take Lemmy to another level by being much faster and more user friendly.

I personally like Boost for Lemmy and Sync but there are many others to choose from. More are linked in the sidebar.

After you do that, make sure to subscribe to many communities. You see a list under the Communities tab and you can choose to subscribe with a click.

You can also go here and see all communities in the entire lemmy universe:

https://lemmyverse.net/communities

Me and @Buelldozer@lemmy.today are trying to keep the bots and spammers out and it goes pretty well so far.

Hope you like Lemmy more than Reddit, most of us here do.. :)

I don't actually use it, so it's no problem from my standpoint, but in case the admin team was unaware:

As of:

https://lemmy.today/post/307248

Photon was apparently working at:

https://photon.lemmy.today/

...but it presently just shows a blank page for me.

This is one amazing blog post. I don't think I've ever identified so much with what they are saying here.

Some quotes from the beginning of the article:

Instead, the tech industry has evolved into an absolute mess. And it’s getting worse instead of better! Our tower of complexity is now so tall that we seriously consider slathering LLMs on top to write the incomprehensible code in the incomprehensible frameworks so we don’t have to.

Programmers today are impatient for success. They start planning for a billion users before they write their first line of code. In fact, nowadays, we train them to do this without even knowing they’re doing it. Everything they’ve ever been taught revolves around scaling.

In modern computing, we tolerate long builds, and then docker builds, and uploading to container stores, and multi-minute deploy times before the program runs, and even longer times before the log output gets uploaded to somewhere you can see it, all because we’ve been tricked into this idea that everything has to scale.

Should one consider this entire community (!tezka_abhyayarshini@lemmy.today) considered as spam ?

Afaik it doesn't have anything illegal, but whenever I go to local feed it's full of this guy and community.

Idk just saying.

Image upload broken? (self.lemmytoday)
submitted 4 months ago by MacNCheezus to c/lemmytoday

As of this afternoon, I am having trouble uploading images to Lemmy.today.

Regardless of client software used, I always receive the following error: "No such file or directory (os error 2)"

Is it just me or is anyone else having the same problem?

So, there's a girl I had a crush on for a while, and recently she (I didn't tell her of my feelings) came ahead and actually told me she is into me for a while.

And...yeah? Boom, apparently I'm in a relationship with my crush who also crushed on me, and I couldn't be happier!

Can't wait to see where this leads us...hopefully somewhere good!

Well Hello There! (self.announcements)
submitted 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) by Buelldozer to c/announcements

Yes I am actually an OG Star Wars nerd. I saw the release of "New Hope" in the theater on opening weekend with my Dad. We've actually seen every SW movie in the theater together. Yes all of them.

Anyway I'm a new Admin here at lemmy.today and @mrmanager@lemmy.today asked me to introduce myself so here goes.

As a GenX my 'online' experience started back in the mid-80s using my Commodore to dial into BBSs then it was BBSs on my custom built 286 (Computer Shopper FTW!) By the early-90s I was running rampant on CompuServ using my Tandy 386, in the mid '90s it was AOL on my IBM Aptiva, and by the late 90s it was ISP connections on my custom built Pentium II PCs.

Along the way I've participated in the rise, fall, and replacement of all the Operating Systems, Applications, Forums, and Aggregators that the last four decades have had to offer. (Dammit I'm old!)

Like many Lemmy users I ~~left~~ escaped Reddit last summer when they started seriously enshittifying the site in the IPO runup. I was actully on lemmy.world first but ended up here after they had too much downtime and too many defederations. I like it here, it's a fast and fairly open instance with very little drama.

Speaking of admin / mod styles mine is "Digital Janitor" and I really try to be as no/low drama as possible in that role. I'm here to to keep this instance functional, federated, and the content in line with whatever policies mrmanger or a community sets for itself. I clean up after spammers, remove objectionable or illegal content, and help with user management. That's pretty much it. I'm simply not interested in the power tripping rot that seems to infect so many Admins / Mods.

I ended up as Admin through an offer to help mrmanager when some other instances were threatening to defederate us due to spam and content problems. In the thread where it was being discussed I offered to lend a hand and the next thing I knew I had a red "A" next to my name! (I'm joking, they did actually ask me first and I took a couple of days to think about it before I agreed.)

I'm around quite a bit so if you run into something that needs attention feel free to reach out. 🙂

Hi all,

We were getting several reports of people linking to csam content in the signal groups community. We tried to contact the moderator but no response in several days.

Its difficult to moderate this kind of content. Moderators of a lemmy community cannot be expected to visit each posted group around the clock to make sure it doesnt have csam content. Signal groups can change their content at any time.

So sorry to say, it had to be removed. If you were using it, I hope you find some other way to find new signal groups.

hello i wanted to bring it your attention that a community on your server called ‘signal_groups’ is being used as a front for sharing csam under the disguise of different group names. i already reported one such ‘vegan’ group link but these groups have been posted under many false names. i've tried contacting the mod of the community but they seem unresponsive. please take it down before it becomes a ground for pervs
