Lemmy Android client (self.general)
submitted 5 months ago by dulcinea to c/general

Hi, guys! I'm new to this so I would like to know what client you use for Lemmy in Android. Currently, I'm using Boost. Any other suggestions?

Are there other places I can report it to? Is it possible I could send it further up the federation chain and maybe they could build a filter for it?

This seems to be the most active local community, but it is random (and different!) people posting basic abstract pictures of birds in about the same style, with nobody engaging in commenting or even upvoting it.

Is there anyone who can explain the concept?

I was hungry asf.

But damn, got some white rice, beef, and some veggies (cucumber and radish) all with that signature sauce that Vietnamese restaurants usually have (I'm not sure what it's called).

And by the Vietnamese gods, it was amazing.

Just like eating it at the restaurant itself; still nice and warm (but then again, the restaurant was nearby my area).

Came in a white plastic container or whatever material you call it.

Oh God, I look back fondly on that meal I had almost an hour ago today.

I was soooooooooooo hungry too and now I'm not.

How is it that you can feel horrible when you're hungry (physically and emotionally) and then feel content and all is right with the world after having eaten?

Dunno... Just don't know...

Anyway, how you all doing? And what did you all eat today (so far)?

I noticed there isnt really a car community on Lemmy, but some of you guys must be driving cars....!

Im only asking because I just leased a new Volvo XC-40 and its amazing to drive. Really, really happy every time i get into it. Also because the music system is pretty damn good and I can play deezer songs and also music from usb stick. :)

Just realized that for the instance of over 800 people, some of which are very active on the Lemmyverse, we have surprisingly little community activity on the inside. So, maybe let's make a chat? How's everyone doing today? :)

I accidentally went on lemmy.world bcs my browser of my autofill and noticed a post from lemmy.world that wasn't federated on here, and it's been like 30 something minutes since it was posted. It was this post specifically: https://old.lemmy.world/post/10259014

Both FireFox on PC and Connect on Android keep signing me out, throwing general "error" messages, and refusing to load the next page.

Liftoff on iOS can't even find lemmy.today in order to add it as an instance!

I'm not seeing any discussion of these kinds of problems elsewhere but they've been consistent since the .19 upgrade and they've persisted after the .19.1 update.

It feels like the new update is slower than before. Anyone else noticed this?

Could be temporary maybe, or something that will be fixed in a update.

But i get timeouts loading pages even, and that never ever happened before.

What are you guys' fitness goals and plans for near future? :sparkles_indigo:

I just created a Technology community here and you should join it!

I think the more communities that are spread out on smaller instances, the better. We should aim to avoid centralized like reddit.

So join up, post something interesting. :)

Instance Performance (self.general)
submitted 1 year ago by mrmanager to c/general

How is the instance performance for everyone? Just wanted to ask so there is no weird things going on.

If you notice images are loading slowish, it's because of how Lemmy software works. Images are stored on the instance where they were created, so if they were created on Lemmy.world and they are slow, you may see them loading slower here as well.

But the text content should be really fast since it's local on the instance.

There are people joining every day but we are still small, and if there is a need for more performance, I will upgrade the instance. Right now it looks like things are humming along fine.

So I'm just curious as to what you guys think (and what's been your experience) with Exploding-heads users.

Do yall see our posts a lot? I'm just curious bc I know pretty much everyone hates us, and although I do see some ppl come here from other instances, it would be nice to r that a lot more.

I just wanna make fucking friends :/ huh idk thanks for reading if you did ! We'd love you guys to stop by more!

I used to love the show Hamtaro as a kid but I could never find a place to watch the show in the US. The logo here is really nostalgic to me. I'm excited to be a part of this part of the fediverse!

I updated the instance to Lemmy version 0.18.1 that was released just an hour ago.

Major changes from patch notes:

  • Major improvements to performance, specifically optimizations of database queries.
  • Fix for another cross-site scripting vulnerability.
  • Captchas are supported again.

I've tried them all and they are all quite good. I think currently Liftoff is the best, followed closely by Jerboa and Connect.

You may have to use f-droid to install them if you can't find them in Play Store. :)

Introductions (self.general)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by mrmanager to c/general

There are a few users joining now every day, and I was thinking it would be nice with some short introductions, if you want to. :)

I for one has grown really tired of what social media is today, and I wanted to try out alternatives where people can actually relax and communicate without being tracked and subjected to horrible ads. Since im a technical guy who currently works in devops, I figured I would start https://lemmy.today, and try to be of service to the community in that way.

Im so tired of internet ads, and I have installed https://pi-hole.net as a network ad blocker at home. So this means my entire family benefits also (everyone on the wifi). Its super interesting to watch how windows and mac machines are constantly calling home, reporting activity, even when the devices are idle. I recommend you guys to do the same if you have the know-how.

Im a long time linux user, and even though it has its frustrations sometimes, specially with screen sharing, its worth it for me to just feel like I own my computer and whats running on it.

So I guess thats a little bit about me. I would love to hear from you guys if you feel confident making a post and share who you are and why you got interested in Lemmy. And also why you are looking for alternatives to reddit. :)

Thank you!

Due to current migration from reddit and lots of signups on Lemmy instances, you may get temporary errors when trying to subscribe to their communities.

Lemmy.ml also currently have their homepage down and you get this message trying to visit it:

404: FetchError: invalid json response body at http://lemmy:8536/api/v3/site? reason: Unexpected token 'T', "Timeout oc"... is not valid JSON

So try to subscribe to communities from other instances if you get errors trying to subscribe to theirs, and then try again later.

Just wanted to write this so new users dont get confused by the errors. They are not related to this instance.

You may have noticed we dont have many local communities here. Its partly because we are quite new, and partly because there are so many good communities on other instances.

You are free to create communities on this instance, but since we are small right now, they wont have a lot of discussions in the beginning.

The best part about Lemmy being federated is that you can subscribe to any community on any other instance and take part in discussions right from this instance, without actually having an account on that instance.

How to subscribe to communities on other instances

Easiest way right now is to open a new tab in your browser, go to https://lemmyverse.net/communities and do this:

  • Click on the link under each community you want to join (like !technology@beehaw.org) to copy it into your clipboard.

  • Click the search button in the upper right area here on https://lemmy.today

  • Paste the link into the search box and click Search.

It may say "No results" but wait for like at least 5 seconds. It sometimes takes time for it to show up.

Sometimes you get a lot of results because its mentioned in discussions that will also generate search hits. The link you are looking for looks like this, as an example:

Technology@lemmy.ml - 1 subscriber

  • Click on the link and in the Sidebar to the right, there is a Subscribe button. Hit that and now you are subscribed. Now you will start seeing new content filling your feed here on https://lemmy.today.

If you have any questions, just ask!
