"Fire": one syllable or two? | Ask the Editor | Britannica Dictionary

The word fire can be pronounced with one syllable or two.

Shelly asks if fire is one syllable or two because her students are using the word in haiku.

Our Pronunciation Editor Josh Guenter responds:

The word fire can be pronounced with either one or two syllables. Native speakers can rhyme fire with higher or not. The word higher is always two syllables. Hence, if you rhyme fire with higher, then you are pronouncing fire with two syllables, whereas if you don't rhyme these two words, then you are pronouncing fire with just one syllable.

Preferably something that goes over the pre-2022 history, covers the 2014 coup and subsequent civil war in Donbass, and NATO expansion.

My goal is to try to MAYBE convince some libs that yes, there are in fact two sides to this conflict, and all things considered NATO is the aggressor here. It's not just ebil Putler trying to rEcReAtE tHe SoViEt UnIoN and INVADE EUROPE !!!!!111

Thanks comrades!

I’m guessing not, but at least they have data privacy laws. Better than nothing I suppose

Amazing how my negative feelings toward this have only grown to adventure time mode since the seemingly overnight and carefully curated fascination with LLMs.

I truly wish someone would do something. Like legitimately anything

Shit’s only getting worse and worse in the industry

Inspired by some of the discussion in this thread. I don't think it's appropriate place for that discussion there, but hey why not have a separate thread for it

If I think religion is not good in general, am I Reddit and cringe and basically Richard Dawkins?

I'm guessing it's like Christianity where there are leftist Christians who follow Jesus' more progressive messages such as giving to the less fortunate and healing the sick, and then there are the scary Christian evangelicals that want A Handmaids Tale and conversion therapy. Logically, Islam probably isn't a monolith in a similar way other religions aren't.

However, I have never heard about what those of the Islamic faith actually believe outside of the hysterical post 9/11 Islamophobia I've been indoctrinated with as a child.

I want to know what the truth is and hear the other sides story. To me it's obvious that Islamophobia is wrong, however when Islamophobes make wild claims about it, I can't really refute them confidently because I'm simply ignorant of the facts. Please educate my dumb, white ass.

These people sure seem serious about their soccer, but I don’t have a home team.

Should I just copy my wife? It might be funny to root against her soccer team sometimes tho.

What is hexbears opinions on British soccer?

I had dinner about 3 hours ago and accidentally swallowed something hard that I felt in my throat. Afterward, my throat felt off, so I took a cough lozenge and later some flurbiprofen AL. Now, when I try to clear my throat, I notice blood in my spit. Initially, it was pinkish, but now it looks more like typical blood. I didn’t see what I swallowed—just that it was part of a potato dish.

I’m assuming it’s either a small wound or maybe something stuck. Any advice? I definitely feel something in my throat but can’t tell what it is.

The bleeding started about an hour ago, and I also feel very light stomach pain. (not sure if its connected to the rest) There isn’t a ton of blood in my spit, but enough to make me concerned (not enough to call an ambulance, I think).

I kind of dont wanna go to bed in case it gets worse and I miss it . But if it stays bad I need to see a doc in the morning.

Any input- tipps etc welcome

He wants to hire me as a talent scout when I leave rehab, but is willing to pay for my recovery home once I leave rehab. According to him he's "Dummy rich, an anarchist, and was saved by someone in the same way" in the 90s. Can I get fucked over by accepting this dude's help?

Would any students or even teachers/profs be willing to give me feedback on my (very) short essay?

It's an essay about how Bisclavret: The Werewolf (a medieval story) is a queer allegory about coping with human nature being different than what is described in Adam and Eve (i.e cis heteronormative monogamy) which was and is the dominant Christian view of human nature.

Most of the essays on Google/DuckDuckGo that come up when you look up "Bisclavret" are queer essays, including an essay published by the foundation of original author, but my prof told me:

  • you didn't even talk about the major point of the story which is that Bisclavret is a werewolf

  • I don't know why you think the king and Bisclavret are engaged in a sexual relationship

  • the connections to homosexuality are tenuous at best

I just want to know if he's docking my marks based on his personal bias or if I'm genuinely not meeting the rubric. I'm second guessing myself and I'm worried I'm overreacting, I'm very sure that I met the rubric requirements but I feel like he just doesn't like my analysis or wants to shut it down because it was using a queer lens (white presumably religious cis het male prof from a religious university/college). I’m afraid if I dispute it he will retaliate and grade me even worse but I also feel very discouraged so if I'm not overreacting I want to dispute it.

I can send an anonymized link to a scrubbed essay and the professor’s feedback through DM if anyone wants to help kitty-birthday-sad

What is the point of this little breast pocket near my left shoulder?

I have like 10 t-shirts with a tiny breast pocket right over my left nipple, and what am I supposed to put in there? I've never put fucking anything in this pocket, but it's always there with a tiny tag from whatever manufacturer made the shirt.
