Part of the problem is that the states collect __information on deaths, whereas the federal government handles Social Security payments. All the data gets stored in a massive database amid a persistent IT shortfall.

According to the IG report, the agency determined it would have cost $5.5 million to $9.7 million to correct the errors, and that it was 'too costly to implement and that the effort would have limited benefit to the administration of SSA programs.'

So they are saying we need a better system and it's not worth the money because the benefit is marginal. Wonder how much is being leaked because article said it wasn't much if at all.
