No Stupid Questions

I've never had an office job and I've always wondered what it is a typical cubicle worker actually does in their day-to-day. When your boss assigns you a "project", what kind of stuff might it entail? Is it usually putting together some kind of report or presentation? I hear it's a lot of responding to emails and attending meetings, but emails and meetings about what, finances?

I know it'll probably be largely dependent on what department you work in and that there are specific office jobs like data-entry where you're inputting information into a computer system all day long, HR handles internal affairs, and managers are supposed to delegate tasks and ensure they're being completed on time. But if your job is basically what we see in Office Space, what does that actually look like hour-by-hour?

The tops are a different color than the bottom of the same tree. I have four of them i rescued. And I'm afraid that I should have covered them this winter. Southern Wisconsin.

Alternatively, should children be allowed to change their names to one in a restricted list anytime before 18, then to anything after 18?

Does anyone know what this is called and/or the shape? Like, is this one long rectangle, a ruana, etc.? I really like it but can't seem to find one that's this big. I either want to buy it or possibly make it, but I can't figure out what the shape is.

When I'm working and have a question, I usually ask the ones I know to be knowledgeable and with ample job experience for advice, because they're the most qualified to give me the best advice.

Sometimes, when I do this, an extrovert who needs to talk will try to answer at the same time the person I asked is answering, meaning I get 2 very similar answers on stereo if that makes sense, but I cannot concentrate on any of the 2 stereo answers.

Sometimes this happens with 3 coworkers: the knowledgeable one I asked the question to and 2 extroverts answering at the same time the person I asked answers.

I hate it when this happens. I'm clearly talking to ONE person, looking at him in the eye. Why do other people feel I'm talking to them, even though I am not making eye contact with them?

I mean, can you guys listen to 2 people answering a question simultaneously and get both answers right?

I've started telling them I cannot hear the answer if they speak at the same time and sometimes I have to tell them I'm not talking to them, but to a specific coworker. So far, they're backing off, but why are (some?) extroverts like this?

To me, the best way to learn something if I'm not reading a book or manual is with one on one conversations: I ask a question, knowledgeable person gives an answer, I write down what I know I'm gonna have to remember and move on. Is this something only introverts do?

The movie Toy Story needed top-computers in 1995 to render every frame and that took a lot of time (800000 machine-hours according to Wikipedia).

Could it be possible to render it in real time with modern (2025) GPUs on a single home computer?

I mean, say, you want a really nice camera, or a drone, or maybe a gaming laptop, and since those things are made in China, they are too expensive to buy right now in the US, since tariffs are over 100%. So you just go to Canada, buy the thing, unpack it from the packaging, and pretend like its just personal items. Just like a smartphone.

AFIAK, border agents usually don't ask if you bought your phone in the US or from outside, they shouldn't ask about other personal electronics, right?

In the last 4 weeks I've worked with several people over 60 and I don't like what I saw: slow giving report or describing a problem, fixation on trivialities about a client's appearance or something funny he did instead of getting directly to the point and doing our jobs, incapable of coping with new forms of communication, feeling they are your supervisor, even though they're not, criticizing you for 'wasting' paper or erasers, telling you how they dislike other coworkers, even though I just met this person 2 hours ago, acting as if only their way of doing things is the right one, then they pretend to be your friend and ask questions about your personal life which I deflect as good as I can.

I don't like working with people like this, it's very draining and I don't want to become this kind of person.

How do I make sure not to become this kind of person?

What if wages for everyone in a company are regularly voted on by the rest of the company? For example, if the manager isn’t doing their job, their wages are lowered by vote. If the manager tries to lower the wages of the workers to a horribly low level, it could either a) be overruled by the majority, or b) the manager’s wages are lowered suit, pressuring them to increase it.

This is probably a really stupid idea that is extremely prone to corruption, but why?

edit 2: someone mentioned that this is kinda like trade unions, where workers can negotiate pay, but in a really horrible method where it becomes a "popularity contest".

I do think that someone else's idea of keeping the every employee's wages some % of the manager/CEO/whatever's wages so that they aren't incentivised to keep inflating their wages is pretty decent.

I really enjoy getting my view of the world challenged, preferably through chronicles and editorials about society, ethics, politics etc.

I consider myself to be open to new ideas and change. I do however have certain strongly held values, which are harder to change.

I know reading books from different authors could also accomplish the same thing. But I find that I rarely have the patience to follow one specific political point of view for an entire book.

I am interested in original ideas, or old ideas that are not mainstream. Pretty much most points of views.

I find that editorials and chronicles is a good way to grow and either enforce or weaken a belief.

Any good RSS feeds, newspapers etc. that focuses heavily on this?

Like imagine posting art somewhere and you get 15 comments, and the extension turns them all into realistically generated hate like "go away" and "this site is so much better without you"

A deadly blow? Will a copycat spring up? Where are the users going in the meantime? Does any of this really matter?

Some FOSS programs, due to being mantained by hobbyists vs a massive megacorporation with millions in funding, don't have as many features and aren't as polished as their proprietary counterparts. However, there are some FOSS programs that simply have more functionality and QoL features compared to proprietary offerings.

What are some FOSS programs that are objectively better than their non-FOSS alternatives? Maybe we can discover useful new programs together :D

I'll start, I think Joplin is a great note-taking app that works offline + can sync between desktop and mobile really well. Also, working with Markdown is really nice compared with rich text editors that only work with the specific program that supports it. Joplin even has a bunch of plugins to extend functionality!

Notion, Evernote, Google Keep, etc. either don't have desktop apps, doesn't work offline, does not support Markdown, or a combination of those three.

What are some other really nice FOSS programs?

edit: woah that’s a whole load of cool FOSS software I have to try out! So far my experiences have been great (ShareX in particular is AWESOME as a screenshot tool, it’s what snip and sketch wishes it could be and mostly replaces OBS for my use case and a whole lot more)

A big one for me is Microsoft office (desktop), Libreoffice and other FOSS alternatives just simply don't come close, and feature wise are 20 years behind. Especially since I basically mastered MS office 2007+'s drawing features, which the FOSS alternatives don't replicate very well.

And of course Microsoft loves to push Office 365. I don't pay for that and just use desktop office, but Microsoft prefers you don't know that you can do this.

And I'm going to get shit on by Lemmy big time for this but while Linux is great and has made vast improvements in recent years, I still use Windows, not only because of MS office, but because a lot of games tend to only support Windows. I know that wine and proton exist but they're not perfect and don't feel quite the same as running native.

I wish an operating system existed with a hybridized Linux and clone NT kernel (using code from FOSS Wine and ReactOS of course) so that the numerous back catalog of NT software can run similar to as intended while also interacting with Linux programs better and using a shared environment. Since it would probably become vulnerable to viruses for windows as well, maybe? (my programming knowledge is extremely rusty) an antivirus similar to Windows defender is bundled with the operating system. Hopefully if someone makes such an operating system it can be a Windows killer and would switch immediately

Hello, I am 2 months out from finishing my doctorate and I want to move to a new country! My brother and my family already moved different places with their jobs so there's no reason for me to stay here when I could be seeing new places too. We have a country picked out and my spouse is excited because they have close friends living in the city we're aiming for. Rather than go through all the new license-to-practice hoops [can easily cost $$$-$$$$ to establish] in the USA just to go someplace else and immediately pay for and take all the re licensing fees and exams I'm wondering if I can just... skip that part and move to a new place and take my exams there. This probably sounds pretty dumb to people who know about how to do this, but I don't know who to ask about this sort of thing. The library wasn't very helpful, and googling "move to XXX" just gives me a ton of websites loaded with either overly generic or overly complex government information and adverts for specialists that ask for a whole lot of intimate data on their webpage before they've even agreed to talk to you. I'd love to talk to a person who can help me. That has to be someones job right? Whats the name of that job? Does anyone recommend smart ways about starting the per-immigration planning process?
