IIRC, it was dismantled after the Commonwealth Office in London told the (conservative, Menzies-era) Australian government to stay in its lane (as a primary producer of agricultural and mineral products) and leave the high-tech stuff to the big countries, and the Australian tories of course deferred to their betters.
