Exchanges are in love with Monero (and in love with privacy coins in general) ... but why?

  • There is no panic and no bad publicity in case of stolen coins (hack), because it is not so easy to find out - the public simply does not know about it. (Just imagine (for example) Coinbase if they lost a million BTC in an hour, that would be a nice panic.)
  • Exchanges can sell (are selling) all these privacy transactions information to Chainalysis. (Bitcoin is public - so no extra income for them.)
  • Exchanges can move coins from their treasury unnoticed. (Sell coins, lend coins or they can do whatever they want with them and no one will find out.)
  • The most clever ones can operate with almost empty treasury. Deposits are usually equal to withdrawals, so there is no need to hold extra coins. No one will notice.
  • ... ?

And this way they can beautifully operate and make extra money. With Bitcoin (and similar public coins), they have limited options. Sometimes it happens that this whole thing gets slightly out of their control (for example in case of huge withdrawals), but that's another story ...

But if exchanges love Monero so much, why delisting (or not listing)? Mostly it's pressure from someone else (AML, regulators, government, institutions ...).

I love monero but .... there has to be built some better options. Nothing seems to work as intented. I tried installing Haveno Reto on windows 11. Seemed to install fine, then started up the Haveno GUI and it wont fully load. I have attached an image of the error mesage.

So then I tried Basicswap. I tried to install it 4 times, each time it gets to the download phase and then fails to complete the download. I have attached an image of the error mesage.

I am not a dev, just and average normie who already has monero in my wallet (I used unstoppable swap/ atomic swap) and wants to swap back out into another mainstream crypto. I used monero first to cover my tracks now I want to swap out of XMR.

I know some of you will recommend just using:

KYCNOT.ME

tradeogre.com

trocador.app

orangefren.com

As far as I know these services use CEX's to make the swap and will request KYC at random. I am trying to use DEX's because I trust no one. I don't trust goverment and I certainly dont trust these random crypto services. If I was a dev I would build a dex with 2 way swaps between XMR and BTC. I know its coming, its coming, its coming, its coming..... blah blah blah.

Its been coming for years, mean while goverments around the world are tightening the noose around our necks. We need real solutions that actually work as intended.

As I understand this is an attack that is enabled mainly by aggregating massive amounts of metadata partially on-chain and partially through CEX.

How (if at all) is FCMP++ supposed to tackle the problem of persistent key image analysis until FCMP++ goes live in one year or so and after?

Is Monero traceable and why scaling matters for privacy w/ Francisco Cabanas (ArticMine)  (MT 324)

TODAY'S 🎙SHOW: Douglas Tuman interviews ArticMine, a monero core team member and well known Monero contributor specializing in scaling and a blockchain surveillance expert.

They dive into the traceability of Monero, discussing recent events around leaked Chainalysis videos. They explore how privacy features such as ring signatures, stealth addresses, and confidential transactions safeguard Monero users from blockchain surveillance.

The conversation also covers the implementation of Dandelion technology, which further protects user privacy by obscuring IP addresses. Throughout, they emphasize the strengths of Monero's privacy model while addressing common misconceptions about its traceability.

Hi All,

I put together a new blog post that considers Monero through the lens of a prominent economic work by F.A. Hayek entitled The Road to Serfdom. There are some interesting parallels in that book and what we find ourselves facing today with increasing political and economic instability. Just sharing my thoughts - but fair warning, it's a bit long!

in the coming days, i'm going to shut down the node.moneroworld service.

I posted the issue 2 days ago, and I've thought about what was said, and yeah its time that public remote node listings should probably be retired.

if you really need to use a remote node, it should really be someones node you trust, and it should ideally be your remote node. And at this point, you really shouldn't need a public remote node. The Monero GUI is easier than ever to run, and mobile wallet providers are doing a good job of providing RPC services to their clients. And if you can't store between 60G and 200G on your own computer, it's time to upgrade.

I'll keep my ports open for a bit longer, but the domain won't resolve to any IP addresses relatively soon.

In addition, simple and bootstrap mode should be deprecated in the GUI, along with the --public-node flag.

wrote a CCS proposal for the wallet-rpc library. would appreciate comments, feedback & support. I have a bigger vision for what I want to build with this library(browser wallet), but it is immediately useful and will result in a more robust checkout flow.

ccs link:

tweet:

if you want to see 1. reduced friction for merchants integrating monero payments 2. a monero browser wallet

please give this an upvote in the CCS.

thanks.

Exchanges like Kraken banning Monero has many bad consequences:

  • you need to use shady services such as changelly
  • when using no kyc exchanges my follow up addresses became blacklisted
  • when transferring those exchanged coins back to a regular exchange they have a trail of coming from “shady” exchanges which puts additional risk on my accounts compliance

Chainalysis, based on the leaked video presentation directly from Chainalysis themselves, shows that their operation is successful and it continues to run even now as we write this article. Lets break down the facts shortly first and then follow up with consequences and possible countermeasures to resist those attacks. The Chainalysis-like attacks are ongoing and will only increase in time. Simply because the current design of Monero allows it.

Chainalysisis running large amount of poisoned Monero nodes through their world-wide operation and their own admins. They call them “our administrators” in the presentation ...

While I'd love to spend XMR on vendors that accept it directly, the options for day-to-day transactions are non-existent. I certainly won't buy a dozen eggs or a jar of honey from a vendor across the atlantic ocean just because they accept monero!

But I'd still love to spend monero and I'd like to avoid selling it to cash first, and the option that comes to mind is a debit card that can be refilled with xmr. So my question is: have you tried any Monero debit card and do they work? Can you use it with Amazon or online retailers in general, or will they reject it?

Thanks

Hi,

I recently read a lot about claims that Monero might get traced, if using malicious remote nodes. People here always recommend to run your own local node. There are two reasons why I don’t want to do this:

  1. I have trouble with the disk space
  2. Synchronizing needs forever. If I start the node every 3 weeks, it needs a hour to synchronize each time

So my thought was: Why not run the remote node on a VPS? Is this as safe as running the node locally? If not, what are the differences?

The VPS (and therefore the IP address) is registered to my name btw

Hello everyone,

As many of you know, getmonero.org has been using the same design for quite some time now. While it's served us well, some community members have mentioned that the current look is starting to feel a bit dated & amateur.

The Monero Website work group is looking for some more community feedback to be discussed at the next meeting (feel free to join!).

Would you prefer to keep the current design, or should we consider refreshing it? We’ve received two alternative concepts by community members Diego and hammermann (linked below) and would love to get your feedback.

Please let us know your thoughts! What do you like about the current site? What would you change? If you prefer one of the new concepts, tell us why. Your input is invaluable as we move forward with making any potential changes.

Looking forward to hearing from everyone!

By the looks of it, they are spoofing transactions, they are not actually breaking the protocol.

This highlights the usage of your own trustworthy nodes to broadcast transactions.

If you’ve ever thought about running a Monero node but felt a bit intimidated by the tech side, don’t worry—it’s a lot simpler than it used to be. You don’t need to be a tech expert to set up a node and help secure the Monero network. All it takes is an old device, and you’re good to go.

AI tools like Grok, Venice.ai (from Bitcoin OG Erik Voorhees), Claude, or ChatGPT make things even easier. Just feed in a simple, clear prompt, and they’ll walk you through the process—troubleshooting, writing commands, or even interpreting terminal screenshots. You can be up and running in no time.

Once your node is set up—boom, leave it running 24/7 and the job’s done. If you want to take it a step further, you can try solo mining and play the lottery or join P2Pool for more consistent rewards. You can also use the node as your personal remote node for your Monero mobile wallet, adding an extra layer of privacy and control.

The Monero network already has over 13,000 active nodes in the last 24 hours, and we could easily hit 15,000 by the end of the year if more people join in. Running a node is a great way to support Monero, and you might learn something new along the way.

So, if you’ve got an old computer lying around, why not give it a try? It’s easier than ever, and every new node helps strengthen the network.

As I promised (on the screenshot) - I inform the community that the response of nonkyc.io exchange seemed very suspicious to me, and I don't recommend trading there, because at any moment they can freeze your money and claim “bad AML”.

I decided today to look around to see where else I could buy XMR for USDT without KYC/AML, and I accidentally found this exchange.

On their website, I found their Telegram chat, and went to them to ask a simple question...

Here are screenshots of the exchange representative's reply:

For those who don't know what an “AML score” is, it's another hurdle by governments and regulators to make life as difficult as possible for people who want to buy/sell crypto/tokens on a transparent blockchain like USDT.

As shady as USDT is, it plays a huge role in the over-the-counter (OTC) market, and often acts as an entry point from fiat to crypto. And for some countries, such as Argentina, USDT plays a much bigger role than just a token.

Those of you who know me, know that I have a lot of experience in the OTC market. And this answer and this behavior of the exchange representative alarms me, and here's why...

I understand that the exchange wants to protect itself from “black” USDT, which was stolen somewhere. But, instead of specifying on their website the total AML score (or separate AML score for different categories) from which they start blocking USDT - they prefer not to say. And this means to me that at any moment they can freeze your USDT or BTC and say that you have a “bad AML score”. And as a rule, this happens as soon as you send a bigger amount to an exchange.

To trade there or not, decide for yourself. I will not send a penny there on principle.

Using Statistics to Improve Monero with Rucknium (MT 323)

TODAY'S 🎙SHOW: Douglas Tuman interviews Rucknium, an empirical microeconomist and Monero Research Lab member specializing in probability and statistical analysis who has made some very impressive contributions to Monero. Including discovering a way to speed up Monero transaction confirmations by 60 seconds!

In this first ever interview, Rucknium maintains his anonymity by typing his responses and having a Monero friend sit in to read his answers. Tremendous thank you to Patchy319 for doing so!

The conversation centers around Monero’s privacy technology, scalability, and Rucknium’s contributions to the project. They highlight the challenges of Monero’s scalability, including node performance and transaction volume, as well as ongoing efforts to address these issues through StressNet, Network-level privacy solutions like Dandelion++ and potential improvements through the Clover protocol are also explored. We also get to hear a preview of Rucknium’s upcoming presentation at Monerotopia24 Confer!

Given the success of the previous MAAMs (see here), let's keep this rolling.

The principle is simple: ask anything you'd like to know about Monero, especially the dumb questions that you've been keeping for you every other days, may the community clarify it all!

Finally, credits to binaryFate for starting the concept!
