Seriously, where do I go? (sh.itjust.works)

I live in an affluent part of South Carolina. It’s become completely overrun with Trump assholes and degenerates. I don’t know how much longer I can take it. Where can we go?

I don’t want the bitter cold of the northeast or Chicago. I don’t want coastal California, it’s insufferable. What are my options? Why can’t we just be fucking normal?!

Do background checks to verify potential employees rely on profiles data brokers have compiled on them? Or do background checks rely on more direct means?

I understand if they stopped printing new blu rays / DVDs, but it’s outrageous and disappointing I can’t just buy the digital edition.

Is there an actual reason companies do this? Do they hate money or what?

Surely if you measured their sound they would have a pitch technically...

I've stumbled into the genre dreamcore or weirdcore. I love the feeling it gives, reminds me of white/brown noise

I'm not very well-versed on all this but it seems

First Past The Post

Benefits the two parties in a two-party duopoly system like that of the US. Boom or bust, black or white. When the party in power pisses you off you vote their competitor even if holding your nose.

Seems like there must be a better way, maybe just not as good for those who prefer shooting fish in a barrel

BEFORE CONTINUING, PLEASE NOTE THERE WILL POTENTIALLY BE ALL KINDS OF SPOILERS BELOW IF THEY ARE NOT HIDDEN By participating, you are consenting to spoilers you might come to regret :)

There's a spoiler-hiding button on Lemmy but since this discussion is about spoilers, I'm not sure how useful it will be.

Does any time in your memory particularly stand out as a truly regrettable spoiler?

examples:

  • warned of a Spoiler Alert while scrolling on YT comments or threads, but clicked anyway. You regretted it.
  • watched weekly-released shows with friends and you weren't caught up but needed to know what happened before you watched it, and you regretted it.
  • haven't seen the movie, thought you weren't going to, you spoiled it for yourself by finding out the plot, and came around to watching the movie and thought to yourself "It would've hit better if I didn't know before hand".
  • podcaster gave a spoiler alert, you proceeded to ignore it, you regretted ignoring it.

It's such a specific feeling of regret, so I am curious how others' experiences were and how they compare.

For me,

spoilerI keep spoiling myself with the show Bleach, reading into the lore and finding out info before actually chronologically watching it (TV)/ reading it in the manga. I come to regret it when I didn't experience the creator's (Tite Kubo) work myself first, then follow up with reading into it for background info. In the earlier part of the series I didn't spoil myself and I feel it was a richer experience because of it.

Also sometimes I listen to "Get Played" which is a podcast about gaming, where they frequently enter "spoiler country" and I love to hear them talk so I get my cowboy hat on and follow them in. I regret it only part of the time.

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West. The first 6 songs are great but the other songs is a mixed beg. It's a 7/10 not a 10/10.

A lot of people worldbuild when they daydream and have the bones of a story kicking around in their brain, but have to pay the bills and raise the kids etc so they never flesh it out and write it down. What's your story's premise? Fantasy, sci-fi, alternate history, mystery, western, whatever genre.

We're last minute people, maybe a week in advance without air travel, a month with. A family friend just invited us to join them on a vacation NOVEMBER 2025. That seems bonkers to me!

How far in advance do you plan a small trip like a road trip or visiting family, and how far in advance for a big trip like international travel, a cruise, or Disney?

The Great Filter is the idea that, in the development of life from the earliest stages of abiogenesis to reaching the highest levels of development on the Kardashev scale, there is a barrier to development that makes detectable extraterrestrial life exceedingly rare. The Great Filter is one possible resolution of the Fermi paradox.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Filter

The Fermi paradox is the discrepancy between the lack of conclusive evidence of advanced extraterrestrial life and the apparently high likelihood of its existence. As a 2015 article put it, "If life is so easy, someone from somewhere must have come calling by now."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermi_paradox

Personally I think it's photosynthesis. Life itself developed and spread but photosynthesis started an inevitable chain of ever-greater and more-efficient life. I think a random chain of mutations that turns carbon-based proto-life into something that can harvest light energy is wildly unlikely, even after the wildly unlikely event of life beginning in the first place.

I have no data to back that up, just a guess.

I'm wondering about that little appendage that’s coming out, what’s that and what’s it doing? Seems to be going away from the light. I tried to google but most result for my searches were just offers to buy a new cactus

This seems to be random. These are communities on the instance I'm logged into. AFAICT I'm not being blocked in these communities. I'm not even sure if mods *can *block someone from seeing a community. I'm guessing this has been asked before, but I couldn't find a thread on it.

America has always rejected fanaticism, especially since WWII. We are supposed to be E pluribus unum -- out of many, ONE. Now, the right wants America to be E unum pluribus -- out of ONE, many.

The battery has "Pb" written on it, so I assume it's lead battery.

Those are the radios in the photo. I adjusted the light levels, but it's not bright enough on that shelf.

I sort of stumbled into this collection. I had the three on the sides for years and two of them were gifts from my wife after I bought the first one because I liked it so much. Then yesterday, I saw that beautiful one in the middle in an antique store/junk shop for $18 and had to have it. Now we have it on that bookshelf in the photo to display them all, but the lighting is really inadequate. I want to install a light above them at the top of the shelf to show them off better, but I really don't know much about this stuff in terms of what sort of light I should be using and I don't want to waste my money on the wrong one.

None of my searching for how to light a Bakelite radio brings up anything fruitful no matter what search terms I can think to use.

Any ideas?

One last thought- Bakelite seems to love dust. I'm going to dust them regularly, but if there is a way to light them well without making the dust show up well, that would be great.

How would one actually calculate the full "fruit of labor" in work that includes several people doing different tasks?

How to calculate between people doing the same task producing physical items seems easy. Add in customer service, sales, and development, and it seems easier to focus on what other groups pay for those skills, which is not what I want.

It also seems looking at the difference between having the role, and not. However some skills are mandatory, just less involved.

Feel free to simplify, but different tasks is a must.

Does anyone have any recommendations for alternate keyboard apps on iOS that don’t censor my less-than-polite speech? Having to type certain words out letter by letter is annoying enough since swipe texting won’t spell them out. And lately it seems like even after I type that stuff out, autocorrect will still go back and change those words. Tired of my phone trying to play Puritan Nanny.

Tried just googling the question, but the only results I get are how to add curse words to the text replacement list, and I’d rather not have to go program in every individual curse word.

Auto-translate? (lemmy.world)

I see a lot of feeds in other languages that I don’t know (I are a merican so i just know the two - baseball and cursing.). But I’d be very interested if there was some kind of babelfish auto-translation for the other posts so I could see what they were about - does anything like that exist or is there any known effort underway to make one?

As it is, I get conflicted between blocking them because I never understand them, or just scrolling by them all. Yes, I should learn German, Swedish, Portuguese, Spanish, and that one they talk in the Britishal Kingdom or whatever, it’s, uh, like it’s on the to-do list but, like, in the meantime . . . ?
