First of all, thank you /u/ljdawson for pursuing Sync for Lemmy. It’s honestly given me so much hope for Fediverse adoption to actually happen. I do have one thought to share with you to help with success:

Come July 1st pretty much all Sync users are going to open the app due to muscle memory or due to a lack of awareness of what’s happening.

If they see “this app doesn’t work any more” or similar, they are simply going to delete the app and will likely go to the official Reddit app. The opportunity to engage them will be gone.

However, you can use it as a huge marketing opportunity if on that day it says something to the effect of:

  • Sync for Reddit doesn’t work any more due to the API changes…
  • However Sync for Lemmy is in development
  • Here’s how you try Lemmy (and/or kbin) in the mean time…
  • Keep Sync for Reddit on your phone to receive a notification when Sync for Lemmy is launched

Even if they don’t try Lemmy right away, if they get a notification from the old app saying the new one is ready they will possibly try it at that time (but you need to convince them to keep the old app on their phone)

But the clock is ticking - after July 1st the chance of engaging someone in this way is very low as they’ll likely uninstall the old app. IMO getting this teed up is of a higher priority than developing the minimal-viable-product for the new app.

Once again, thank you for doing this! I am so hopeful and excited for a viable alternative to Reddit and Sync could be such a huge piece in making it possible!

The best thing that could happen to Sync users and Lemmy as their new platform alike, would be an as seamless transition as possible:

An update to the app at the end of the month, a quick explanation "Hey, you might have heard that Reddit has locked us out from their API, this App now supports Lemmy instead" and, ideally: "Sync will help you sign up for and/or migrate your existing subscriptions to Lemmy as much as possible".

Any additional friction, like:

  • having to re-download a different app
  • having to re-do all settings and customization
  • having to resubscribe to all personal interests
  • additional pay-gates
  • any day of down-time between Sync for Reddit's demise and Sync for Lemmy's launch

would diminish the Sync user base.

I fully realize that this is a massive ask, and that some of it wouldn't necessarily be in /u/ljdawson's best interest. Maybe it's sufficient to seamlessly migrate the free user (monetization wouldn't change for them anyway), while Pro users can be trusted to rebuy a new Pro app (maybe with a settings import or migration option)?

Deleting my account on July 11th, and this post where people mistook me for LJ (due to my admittedly improperly worded title) was supposed to be the final goodbye.

Now, this one is. And I won't miss a bloody thing. Here's to Lemmy! See you on the other side :-D

I'm so conflicted???

Is anyone else in the same situation as me?

Logged back into Reddit after seeing the buzz about Sync for Lemmy and just noticed it's my cakeday! Thank you for keeping Sync alive! Can't wait till it's done!

Or any other fediverse reddit-like site? Would love to keep using Sync, but keeping it only for one instance or set of instances seems odd. Then again, I'm still a bit clueless about the differences between these instances.

Thank you!!

This is exactly what I needed to get me on Lemmy, and off of Reddit. I will purchase your Pro version the second it is released.

As a future Apollo refugee, it’d be awesome to be able to use sync on my apple devices. It’s the only android app I know which I felt was „up there“ with Apollo.

Any chance at all you might consider an iOS version?

I think it would be really cool if we had a Lemmy community to discuss this topic.

Hi! I'm a Sync user who was looking for a way to find a reddit alternative, but found lemmy to be too... unorthodox for my tastes. That is until I saw Ljdawson was making a Lemmy app!

Couple of questions:

  1. From a quick browse, I've seen hundreds of servers. What are them? For example if I create a /r/sync in instance 1, can users from instance 2 find the same subreddit? Or they can even create a second /r/sync if they want? Isn't that kind of decentralization bad for building communities?

  2. Are servers privately run? Is there any failsafe in case a server owner decides to close it in a fit so all the thousands of users aren't left hanging & their content deleted? I fear it puts too much power in the hands of only a few (I've seen plenty of abuse coming from power tripping reddit mods in my lifetime).

  3. Is there a global lemmy instance run by the owners of the site?

Thanks!

My plan is to get an MVP out in the next 3-6 weeks.

What should make the first release?
