This is a woefully underpowered laptop I got for free! I'm working to make it into a secure portable machine (since it does support secureboot & TPM-backed disk encryption) to take on the go that I don't fear losing. This is mostly for doing programming & study, on stuff that doesn't require high-performances, so the 2 gigs of RAM are just about enough for regular use -- and it prevents me from being distracted, as I can't load most website on that poor thing…

I'm using 2 bars -- I originally only wanted to use a vertical one, unfortunately not all waybar modules support rotation, so I settled for this, which works quite well in my experience :3

Stuff I use:

  • Catppuccin Frappe as a color scheme on most things
  • Emacs for programming & taking notes (org-mode my beloved)
  • Alacritty as a terminal, with the fish shell
  • Firefox (fuck chromium)
  • stmps as a music player, connected to my selfhosted Nextcloud instance, with a bunch of songs obtained through legal means (obviously)
  • Waybar for a bar, with nm-applet for controlling networkmanager and blueman-applet for controlling bluetooth
  • fcitx5 + mozc for japanese input
  • dwl with the following patches
    • ipc
    • toplevel management
    • touchscreen
    • autostart

I will probably release all my configs in an organized way once I feel like this setup is closer to completion.

A minimal desktop setup.

Info:

  • Programs: Emacs, Devdocs, pfetch, imv
  • WM: Hikari
  • OS: Void linux
  • Art by: Escher
  • Dotfiles

Recently switched from Guix to Void, mostly because it's much simpler and I felt that my desktop didn't need the complexity of Guix.

Do you use or know of any cool module for polybar that allows to manage notifications, especially if they include a no-disturb mode or even let us see previous notifications too like some kind of rofi menu?

  • colorscheme \\ biscuit
  • the quality of the image is bad!! \\ don't worry, i know! that's why i'm placing all three below YOUR bulletpoint! (blame imgur for the bad quality of these)
  • who made the wallpaper? \\ read the text in the screenshots! (i'm too lazy to retype it)
  • why did you type so much text inside the screenshots? \\ i like talking to myself!
  • why do you keep playing with the name of the colorschemes you use? \\ i have fallen to the hands of my as(th)ma

final stuff: thanks for reading

oh and also, i think i'll crosspost this to the other unixporn (i may not do this, but i'll try to remember to)

EDIT: fix on the links not working

questions (and answers)

  1. what's that music player? (atleast i think it is..)
  2. wtf is soswav.love?? is it an actual link?
    • no, it isn't a link and i don't think it ever will! and, ehem, it looked cool! (soswav stands for 'sleeping on sound waves', if you're curious..)
  3. what is elvish and why are you in /home/soswav/.config/elvish
  4. what's that terminal font? and what is that font in waybar?
    • CaskaydiaCove Nerd Font Mono (miracode is still cool) | terminal font
    • Ubuntu Nerd Font | waybar font
  5. did you make that waybar style?
    • nope! it uses the waybar style by Krautt and the modules by JaKooLit, i edited some of the modules so it looks more like this setup by someone i don't remember the name of (also, if you ever see this: thanks for sharing your terminal font!)
      • why though?
        • as i've said previously, i'm not very original and i *really* like their waybar config! (i do want that wallpaper, though.)
  6. IS ANY OF THIS CUSTOM!?!?!?!?
    • kinda? most of the stuff i have is taken (or inspired) from other setups but i always end up editing it to give it a more 'my-way' look
  7. what is that wallpaper?
    • this: (unedited)
    • this: (edited)
  8. how many posts are you going to do about this damn thing?!?!!?
    • uh, i'll finish it here! hope this isn't getting too annoying!
  9. how many bullet points are these?
    • around 26 (i think..)

The wallpaper is one of the standard XBM images included with the X11 distribution (in OpenBSD, it's at /usr/X11R6/include/X11/bitmaps/mensetmanus).

The fonts are the Modern DOS collection (8x8 for the battery status, 8x16 for the terminal). The window titles use the classic bitmap Helvetica which has no antialiasing and gives it a unique "Vintage system" vibe.

I was going to give it a full CDE install, but the build guides don't seem to work right; I might switch to SparkyLinux for this machine because suspending fails just often enough to be annoying.

I am extremely pleased with how it looks. Initially, I was quite concerned about achieving a similar appearance and after two unsuccessful attempts, I felt defeated and abandoned the effort. However, thanks to the helpful individuals in the Matrix chat who assured me that achieving the desired look with Waybar was indeed possible, I decided to give it another shot, initially to prove them wrong. To my surprise, I was met with significant progress. While there are still some finishing touches and refactoring to be done, I plan to address these gradually as time permits. Currently, it is functioning perfectly and is user-friendly.

i fixed my bar thing

detail(s

  • os \\ nixos
    • why are you on nix-shell??
      • i don't want to install grimblast fully, yet!
  • shell \\ elvish (config here)
    • why elvish?
      • its good (and it also boots pretty quickly, somehow..)
  • colorscheme \\ n0tch2k
    • why don't you just use gruvbox instead?
      • i like n0tch2k more
  • firefox css \\ ArcWTF with this firefox theme (gruvbox and n0tch2k look similar, so it kinda blends in!)
  • wm \\ hyprland
  • wallpaper \\ here
  • fetch thing \\ afetch

notes:

  • i moved to hyprland again! (i try to evade fixing stuff, so i kinda just keep moving between plasma and hyprland..)
  • waybar config is (kinda) custom, it uses the waybar style by Krautt and the modules by JaKooLit
    • erm why??
      • i feel braindead! (and i don't feel creative, either..)
  • there are NO scripts on my config yet! (aka i can't screenshot by doing a demonic ritual)
  • all of this in lowercase because i'm terrified of what people say!
  • the font in the newtab page and terminal is Miracode
  • i may use the script provided by ProtoShark on my old post soon

Looks like my previous post was taken down for violating lemmy.ml's rule 1, so I made the post again and replaced the word 'rice'...it should be fine now. Here are the configuration files.
