I’m looking to upgrade my unraid server and am considering this cpu. I plan to pass a Nvidia gpa to one gaming vm. I want another to use the cpu igpu. Can I use the igpu in a vm and use it in my Plex and jellyfin docker containers? I know you can’t use an external gpu in both docker and VMs but am not sure about an igpu.

I know in the past you couldn’t use anything over 10 generation. But am hoping the latest version of unraid changed that.

I've spend months doing different hardware, modifying the build, getting everything setup. New QNAP router to muscle it all around. Hardwired the house. Installed all the drives I kept acquiring and finally after 8 weeks of 24/7 downloads I'm finally there. Trial and error for what seems like forever I now have everything built, running super solid, shoved in the utility room. The Mesh wifi and wired lines I had dropped area all great. I did all this so i could enjoy any content I wanted and now I'm looking at it trying to figure out what to do next. It's only a plex machine for now. 11600k, rtx 4060, 64GB, 278TB.... currently at 28 days of uptime under the most demanding of situations and now it's just sitting there chillaxing. Where do I go from here?

I have a aging and power hungry NAS that is powered by a 4790k. I just stumbled on a video with the Tipton N5105 itx motherboard that is perfect for my needs but am unsure of the Celeron n5105. Is it capable? Does a simple nas for file storage need 32gb ram or is 16 good enough?

Worth it to get the n5105 board and think it’ll go far into the future?

Let’s hear it.

Please do not say get a larger motherboard. It’s a pre-existing system with everything populated

To start off, I'm running EVGA 1000w power supply Asus ROG Maximus XII Hero(WiFi) Intel I9 10850k(10c/10t) CPU 64gb ram 3 pci SSDs 2 HDD SATA drives 1 Nvidia RTX 3080 TI founders edition(NOT VFIO-PCI binded at boot) 1 AMD SWFT 309 RX 6700 XT(VFIO-PCI binded at boot) 1 Intel iGPU

I have installed the apps Radon TOP NVidia Driver Intel GTV-g Intel GPU TOP GPU Statistics

I have Plex-Media-Server(running 24/7, auto start) Steam-headless(only running occasionally when Nvidia VM isn't in use) Windows 10 VM(setup using the Nvidia 3080 TI) Windows 10 VM(setup using the AMD RX 6700 XT, passthrough w/VFIO-PCI binded) I set my VFIO allow unsafe interupts to "YES" (neither fixed the problem) I set the PCIe ACS override to "BOTH" (only one that splits my GPUs out separately)

My problem is when I start my AMD windows 10 VM, it will load and everything works perfect until the graphics is under heavy load(aka loading into a game) the entire server locks up and only way to reboot is to hold the power button. I can load my NVidia windows 10 VM and can play any game without problem(other than heat lol) but the moment I try to load anything with only the AMD machine or with my other VMs and Dockers running and it crashes everything. If I turn on my VM and then shut down it gives me an error stating "internal error:unknown pci header thpe'127' for device '0000:04:00.0'(my AMD card) I have googled everything I can and am a noob at all of this, so I am completely lost and don't want the ~$400 GPU to sit and not be used. I appreciate any help y'all can give. This unraid system is amazing and I love the setup but it is a huge headache sometimes, but worth every second of it. LOL

I had it crash yesterday and was able to pull the logs from my VM and the unraid server. But am not able to post the text for some reason. It errors out when I copy it into the app. 🤷🏻‍♂️

So to follow up from my last post. I’m looking at the intel i5 13500 with 32gb ram not sure about the mother board due to wanting to have space for a hba and a nvme pcie card (so I can install more nvme down the line)

At the moment I’m only running a Plex server most users are direct play with an occasional transcode. I do have 4k content but not sharing with non local users at this time.

Would like to set up the arrs and of course Plex. And maybe a vm. Gpu wise I’ll be using the 1050ti up until I get get a hold of a p2000.

Price range is between £500 to £700 with out the case as I’ve already picked that

ZFS Pool+RaidZ+Snapshots equivalent to backups (maybe even better than traditional backups)?

I'm considering using ZFS as my backup solution. Instead of using a dedicated backup tool (e.g. restic), I'm thinking of just doing this:

  1. Create an Unraid ZFS pool with 3 equally sized hard drives.

  2. RAIDZ1 (maybe RAIDZ2 in the future).

  3. Stripe the parity across the drives via ZFS.

  4. Create snapshots via ZFS.

  5. Schedule periodic snapshots and scrubs.

  6. If I add more storage (add another drive), my backups/parity are automatically taken care of.

What I like about this solution is:

  1. It does everything: parity, backups, integrity checks, restoring/healing. Also managed from the Unraid UI. Also like the idea that everything is included at the root level for complete protection.

  2. My backups are parity protected !!! Right?

  3. If I decide not to use Unraid in the future, my ZFS pool/parity/snapshots are still 100% portable and functional to migrate to another platform.

Note 1: For critical data, I backup to the cloud too.

Note 2: I have no plans to backup my complete data pool to the cloud or remote server (too expensive).

Thoughts?

I see lots of posts about gaming VM's and pass through of GPU/NVME/etc. Are people playing directly on the server or using some remote streaming app? I build my unraid to take the load off my gaming PC so I don't understand why you would want less than optimum quality from a VM on shared resources.

If two dockers both require the use of say Redis, do you create multiple instances of Redis? Or can you create separate DB's in the single Redis docker?

Hi,

I started my unRAID journey 4 years ago with 1 SSD.

At that moment I followed a guide I found on unRAID forums who advised to mount the SSD as an UD and put Docker folders and VMs on it.

1 year ago I rebuilt my config, moved the data on a new ssd (nvme) and started to use the old one (SATA) as cache. So the 2 SSDs may have different performance.

I don't really use the Cache. My main use of my system are long term storage (photo), Plex and some Docker apps I like (Pihole, youtubedl, Unifi, ..)

My question :

Should I keep it like this?

Or is it better to move the files from UD to cache ?

Should I then build a pool of 2 (allowing redundancy) or not given the 2 SSDs are differents.

Thank you

TL;DR should I stop database containers before creating a ZFS snapshot of them? How?

Ever since I upgraded to 6.12.3, I have been playing around with ZFS. I recently upgraded my SSD drives, so I figured I would upgrade my 2 cache pools to ZFS. Works great!

One of the pools contains my appdata, and I want that to be as safe as possible. The pool itself is mirrored, so that's one base covered.

Next, I want to do a daily snapshot and backup of my appdata to the array. To achieve this, I have converted the appdata folders to datasets datasets, and I set up replication of those datasets to one of my array drives, that I also converted to ZFS. So 2 copies, with snapshots, but still on the same server. Safe from my own screwups, but not from catastrophic server failure.

Next up: offsite backup. I opted for cloud storage, since setting up an offsite server with ZFS replication was either too expensive (zfs.rent, rsync.net) or cumbersome (separate unRAID at a friends house or so). So I opened an account at Wasabi, and configured Duplicacy to backup the appdata folder on the array drive to Wasabi on a weekly basis.

This seemed to work great, until I actually messed something up with the config of one of my Postgres databases, figuring I could just restore a snapshot if something went wrong. After the rollback, my database was corrupt :o

Thinking back, this makes sense, since a snapshot of a database is not guaranteed to be 'complete' since some data can still be floating around in memory. This is why plugins like Backup/Restore appdata will stop containers before backing them up.

But u/spaceinvaderone 's script to do the replication provides no option to stop containers before creating the snapshots (even though the script to convert folders to datasets DOES have this option).

Now I'm worried that I'm creating useless snapshots and backups. Any advice on how to tackle ZFS snapshots of live databases?

I've been using this i7-9700 for the past few years and yesterday the iGPU is performing at barely 1% of it's performance. It has been running 100% for the past few weeks. I've restarted my unraid box and still have the same issues.

intel_gpu_top takes like 5 seconds to load and when it does the load is very very low instead of being 100%. Is there a way to reset it or did it just gave up the hard work I've been giving it? lol

Is there something I can try?

Any hardware encoding (emby or plex) don't work anymore. I didn't update plex 6.11.5 and the containers haven't updated except tdarr which is the one that was running 100% igpu for many weeks.

Instead of checking files at 200-300 fps it now goes at 2-3 fps...

I'm thinking of making the switch from TrueNAS Core to UNRAID and I use mine mostly for PLEX. I can't currently stream 4K videos on my LAN without them freezing only seconds into starting to play. I've come to the conclusion that it's due to PLEX being unable to hw transcode with my single video card. TrueNAS Scale can do GPU pass-through with more than 1 GPU, and I assume it's probably the same with UNRAID.

Can any of you confirm if PLEX in UNRAID supports GPU pass-through?

I assume a second GPU is required?

What do you use for GPU(s) in your UNRAID for transcoding? Specifically, what works for 4K hw transcodes for you?

I want to setup unRaid but unclear on the pools, raid portion, these are the disks I have: 1 NVME 2TB 1 HDD 2TB

  1. HDD 1.4TB

I’d like speed and fault tolerance. What would be the best config and how much storage would I have?

So, my unraid server has been offline for over a year. I just plugged it in and got it up and running. Since turning it back on none of my old VMs and dockers were functioning, just giving me execution errors. Ive since deleted every docker container along with every appdata for those dockers. I deleted my old VMs to attempt to start over, but im not sure what is going on.

My server is spiking to 100% cpu usage just trying to install a docker container, constantly locking up the server. I attempted to setup a VM and it locked up in the install process with the CPU sitting at 100% for hours....

Something that is lining my notification bar is my docker utilization keeps bouncing off 100% and going back to normal...

Im not sure what to do, so i can return my server back to functional.. I can't even get it to simply install Plex APP with stock settings without customizing anything. It shoots the CPU to 100% and keeps locking up.

Idle: CPU is around 3%

Server hardware:

intel 10100

16GB Ram

HBA

2 x 1TB m.2 SSD cache pool ZFS

5 x 8TB HHD array pool XFS

Please pardon my vm ignorance. If I want to pass my NVMe of close to bare metal performance (is it even worth it?) to be primarily used as my daily (Linux) what the best approach in installing the OS? Is it even worth it if I don't really game? The most intensive tasks would be Davinci Resolve. I do need to run a Vm through the VM for Fusion360 work in a windows environment...wine didn't play well.

Seagate exos x14 vs x16

Quick question, searched the sub before asking and seagates website no longer shows the ability to compare exos x14 vs x16.

Does anyone know what the difference is other than manufacture date?

I built my unraid plex server a few months ago with a good deal on 4 renewed 12TB x16 exos drives from a well known/well reviewed reseller.

The seller seems to have a good reputation/offer a good warranty so I’d like to stick with them. They are currently out of x16s but have a really great deal on 12TB x14 drives. Planning on buying 6 of them. 4 more to add to my server(3 storage/1 parity) and 2 for cold spares.

Just wondering if there’s any major differences that would effect performance between x14/x16 and if there’s any reason I shouldn’t expand my server with the x14s.

Thanks for any info.

So it’s is getting harder and harder to find 32GB drives that are reputable. The Samsung Fit doesn’t seem to be sold anymore, the Samsung Bar has an insane markup on Amazon. SanDisk seems to only have counterfeit drives.

What options are left? I’m redoing my server and need a fresh drive.

Im planning out my unRaid server to server as my NVR for my Camera System im installing soon as i decide on all the equipment i need. I plan to use the Frigate docker for this and combine it with a Coral TPU for AI processing.

For the storage side of things, should i run a separate pool for the video data? Should i run a seperate cache or use my main cache drive or just use a normal mechanical drive for those storage in a seperate pool? Would ZFS benefit me any in this?
