The following devices are being used to build the UnRaid server:

  • AMD Ryzen 5 5500U Mini PC
  • 2*16GB G.Skill TridentZ DDR4 Ram
  • Samsung 980 256G SSD(Ready upgrade to 2*1T )
  • The drives are Western Digital 4T&16T

Cooler: It is an unknown USB fan. I might upgrade my enclosure to a 2*20TB in the near future, and I am concerned that the temperature might be much higher than it is currently.Would it be better to just use a different fan? Any recommendations? I'd like to keep things as cool as possible。

Case use for Plex 2 users, NAS, VM's(Running 6 Docker Containers Radarr, Sabnzbd, Plex, Jellyfin, Overseerr, Unmantic), Home automation, Nextcloud, etc. I plan to have multiple VM, W11, W10 and some Linux. Most of the time they'll be off when not in use

I really love it and want to keep everything in this case!

Happy to hear any recommendations you have or general advice for building a first machine! I'm sure I'm overlooking some things or there are places where I could easily scale back and save a bit of money. Thank you all

Basically.

I have a 4x4TB Server i've had for years now. This gives me 12TB of storage. It's approx 75% full so i've been looking at options for expanding. I only have 6 sata slots all used (4HDD, 2SSD in raid)

However all of them involve buying minimum 2 large drives to only get the capacity of one due to parity.

My server breakdown is probably something like:

500GB photos

1TB Backups

1TB of documents/data.

Some other misc.

But the majority of my data is pirated films using the arrrrrr dockers.

I've thought about moving all my films/tv to a non-protected unassigned device that radarr/sonarr/plex can access outside of the array. I can then stick a large single HDD in for film/tv. I have a multigigabit connection so worst case the drive fails and I redownload loads of tv and films again?

Is unassigned devices robust enough to function well with these dockers?

Hi guys - new here. I am in the proces of buying equipment to make my own NAS server I currently have an older 5 Bay Synology NAS, taht I haven't used for years, because I started using Google Drive Enterprise, and then Dropbox. Since dbx is terminating their unlimited space plan, I figured I might as well start building my own storage.

I currently have 5 4TB WD Red disks from the Synology - 1 of which I seem to remember was having issues. I then went and bought a 20TB Seagate Exos, but missed the part about the largest drive only working as parity, so I need another if I am going to use the space. I was actually thinking of using the 4TB disks in an xfs pool, and buy a couple more 20TB disks down the line for ZRaid zfs. Does that make sense

I bough a license before even installing the server, thinking that I could do with the basic version, but I also have 3 NVME's i would use as cache, so I am already over the 6 drive limit in basic. I just did not factor the cache drives into the equation :)

I'm trying to build a ultra low power server.

At the moment, I'm stuck at 18W without drives.

I have a Ryzen 5 5600G with 32Gb RAM and a PRIME B550-PLUS

I have tried playing with C Stats, but I can not get it below C3

I have 8 HDDs that i want to put into the system.

It should only run some dockers like jellyfin some downloaders and HAS.

My goal is 30W max with drives. Is that possible?

Use case: Plex 90% of the time, I’m not sharing with anyone besides my spouse and the kids when they get older. Need hardware transcoding because my upload speed isn’t high enough to direct play outside of my home (most movies are 4k remux dolby vision). Also going to be the Plex music solution. And an app for photo management. Besides that I need easy access to a few folders in my network. Absolutely no virtual machines, dockers or anything like that. I’d also prefer to keep power usage low.

HDDs: a mix of 4tb, 2x 6tb, 8tb, 10tb and a 16tb (will use this one for parity.

Also have 2 nvmes lying around (970 evo plus) which can be used for caching if that’s a benefit.

I’d prefer staying under 750 euros if at all possible. (Excluding the unraid license cost)

Thanks in advance!

Just wondering if anyone runs a self hosted url shortener on Unraid.

And if so how did you achieve it.

Thanks

I'm following Trash's guide for Sonarr and Radar and it's working great. I'd like to duplicate that for manually downloaded files. I'd like to have a symlink in my "torrents" folder pointing to where I'd like the files final destination to be where I can possibly rename them.

I've already downloaded the files into the "torrent" folder. How do I move them, but still point to them in qBitTorrent to seed? Thanks.

Hi friends,

My power supply just crapped out on me and I'm in need of a new one. I believe the reason is because I was trying to stuff 10 3.5" hard drives in a tiny case with an underrated PS. I'm tossing around the idea of some sort of external HD enclosure with it's own PS but I really don't know what to get. I have a tendency of getting the wrong dang thing and forcing it to work. I have a asus pro b460m-c motherboard and need something compatible with it and my current disk array. Can someone recommend something under $300USD that is fast enough to run my ...darrs and Plex Media Server. A lot of the ones I am seeing are USB and I believe that would be terribly slow for my application. I like the idea of the Silverstone Tek RL-TS821S 8 Bay for $400. But it's higher than my budget and it it only takes the 2.5" drives.

Thanks in advance!

I would of asked this in the radarr subreddit, except they are protesting for some reason so I cannot... maybe someone here can help?

All my movie folders have a quality in the name which is silly, because radarr does not update the folder name if you update the quality :-), oops, I made a mistake some time ago and added the movie quality to the folder name, and I also have just moved them all to a new server.

Just wondering if there is a way to...

  1. on mass, change the root folder for all the movie locations
  2. remove the Bluray-720p part from all the folders?

I have tested out the bulk rename utility, so I can easily do it that way, but then how do I tell radarr they have all changed, or do I have to run a script over the SQLite database?

Hey guys, I have been happily running unRAID for 7 years at an orphanage in Africa. My main storage server is an HP Microserver Gen 7 with 2x 4TB and 1x 8TB storage. Shoutout to Lime for sponsoring the licenses here!!

My backup server is a Core i5-3330 with 2x 256GB SP SATA SSDs and 7x 1TB notebook drives.

The drives are starting to show their age, and starting to throw out CRC errors.

Who has some 2TB or bigger drives that are unused an looking for a new home? We have a visitor coming from the US in about a month, they have agreed to bring a couple of drives over if I can get the drives to SF.

Cheers!

Newish to Unraid. So far I LOVE it and wish I had moved to it sooner. When I set it up I wasn't aware of any issues with having SSD's in the array or as a parity drive so I have 1 Samsung 980 Pro as my single array drive (only used for containers/VM's to live on) and a 980 Pro as the parity disk. My thought process was this would basically act as a RAID 1 and provide redundant fast AF storage for my containers and 2 VM's. This has been running great for about 3 months now with no issues or failures at all, I have no complaints.

I have since seen many posts about how it's bad to put SSD's in the array or use as a parity drive because TRIM on the SSD can cause inconsistencies. My question is if I have Trim disabled in Settings>Scheduler then what is the harm with this setup? I've tried searching for this but all I can find is people saying don't do it. I know performance can suffer without trim however I'm only using about 25% capacity and I don't really see that growing very much at all, maybe 5-10% at most.

I'm running two 1TB SSDs in a mirrored (RAID1) btrfs cache pool.I'm running out of space hence I would like to upgrade both SSDs to two 2TB SSDs.

Ideally I would like to avoid any unnecessary downtime, hence I was wondering if it is possible to do the following:

  • turn off server and replace one of the 1TB SSDs with one of the 2TB SSDs
  • turn server on and choose the newly installed 2TB as part of my existing cache pool, replacing the 1TB SSD i just removed
  • start array and let the RAID1 rebuild
  • once completed, turn off server and switch out the other 1TB SSD with the second 2TB SSD
  • turn server back on, selecting the second 2TB SSD as member of the cache pool
  • start array and let the RAID1 rebuild again

Once completed my cache pool should be running with both of the 2TB SSDs, with minimal downtime.

Will that work or am I missing something?

Will I actually be able to use the upgraded storage or will there be an issue as the pool was created only with 1TB of storage?

Thanks a lot for any help!

EDIT: forgot to mention that all M.2 slots are full already. Just adding more SSDs and keeping the old ones in place does not work because of this.

I am trying to get automatic ripping machine set up to rip some DVD's, and I have the container up and running and it is ripping DVD's. The problem is, it is using my CPU to transcode even tho I have a the green check next to Nvidia NVENC on the admin page. I have followed the steps here (nvidia · automatic-ripping-machine/automatic-ripping-machine Wiki · GitHub) and everything lines up, but when I get to the post install I am not sure where those variables need to be set in the config file, or where those commands need to be run. I checked the config file expecting to see those variables commented out, but I do not see anything there. Can I just paste them anywhere in the config file to get the GPU encoding working? Also do I need to run those commands in the Unraid shell or the ARM shell, because in Unraid shell I get no user error, and in the ARM shell I get no sudo error.

Edit: I know the DVD drive and file paths are working, it reads the DVD and pops the drive after ripping, but when it hits the transcode stage the CPU goes to 100%. I know the P4000 works, as it is in use to transcode for my Plex Container(Edit) and is having no issues with that.

Edit 2: everything is on Unraid, I am running Plex in a docker container too, no VMs spun up at all

Hey r/Unraid!

I'm trying to secure my Unraid server. So far, I have:

  • docker-compose
  • running an immich server behind it's immich_proxy (nginx)
  • traefik in front of that, with cloudflare dns challenge setup for ssl.
  • port forward only port 443 on the router.
  • cloudflare tunnel (cloudflared) in front of that to hide my ip.
  • root password set

But all of my API keys, passwords, and tokens are stored on .env and docker-compose.yml files. That seems unsafe.

  • How do I setup docker-compose secrets on unraid? Should I?
  • How do I point the secrets at the secret files? All the tutorials use "./password.txt", but I don't know where "." is for docker-compose. Is there somewhere safer to put them?

Thanks for any help or guidance!

(post re-created to change the title to a question, so it doesn't look like a how-to-do-this post.)

I’m currently running a i5-11500 with its iGPU for Plex and working fine with the work load I currently have in unraid

I’ve just been weighing up upgrading to a 12500 and a new motherboard.

how much more better is the 12500 over the 11500 for Plex transcodes? Does it also run more efficiently In terms of overall power? (Which would be another selling point)

essentially uhd 750 vs. Uhd 770 for Plex transcodes. Anyone got a graph or a list of how many transcodes these igpu can do?

thanks.
