Fruits and vegetables inside bottles are grown by placing a bottle around the blossom or young fruit and securing it to the plant. The fruit then grows to full size inside the bottle.

Didn't you read the summary? They put a juvenile penny in the jar and it grew inside until mature.

Nowadays the most common way is to just buy Greg's Instant Penny Powder, mix that with water inside the jar, and let it sit for 24 hours.
