You don't have to be far left to not want to make a space for bigotry. People are deciding for themselves that they want nothing to do with right wing instances - nothing you can do about it.

Agree, and most instances that have defederated have done so with the majority support of the whole user base (as much as that can be accomplished.) This is not the issue with defederation, the issue is creating "islands" without (innocent) users knowing they are on them. Grandma just wants to hang out in /c/sewingclub and ask about cross-stitch. She's not going to stick around when she asks why she didn't see a comment and gets called a nazi. (Maybe she is one, but point stands.)

My sleep deprived brain made out of it "Grandma just wants to hang out in /c/swingclub ..."

Lol grandma the swinger?

Grandma is using lemmy, where? Id be shocked, i get the merits, im not excusing the behavior of my instance because we host it that way but like i said its two communities out of like 150 that contain edgy material, its the free spee Absolutism that gets us ppl, not the bigotry imo, im not interested in banning ppl, important to note I’ve always been welcoming and helpful to ppl throughout the fediverse and helped many ppl understand how to use it better, personally when visiting other instances im on good behavior and ive sent dm’s to the users on EH that crossed over snd caused trouble, fwiw, im trying the best i can experimenting with free speech absolutism and being to say as i please on my own instance, i get the outrage though im not dumb. I really wanted it to be a debate center to bridge the gap between left abd right, that was the initial mission three years ago

Sorry to bother you once again. I think here is actually the notable part of this thread. This is interesting:

I really wanted it to be a debate center to bridge the gap between left abd right, that was the initial mission three years ago

Without a demand for a quick answer ... if this is so then it's a noble cause gone astray somewhere. I'm thinking, without knowing any of the story, could this be somehow put back on track? I mean, as it is now many people on both sides are doing the opposite; they go yet more polarising. This could have little to do with EH, or it could indeed be a systemic failure of how EH is supposed to work. -- I'm always thinking when i chat with some stranger online, how would be their reaction if they met me "irl" ... because they have no idea even closely, about who i am and about my lifestyle. How would certain people behave when we would meet in person? -- The reality is that we crtainly exhibit a different persona in a restricted environment like this. All the cues of meeting a real person are missing, and all that remains is the words. We know from experience that certain natural restraints are not there if the perception of there being a real person is mostly missing. People are more or less aware of this. There is a perceived distance to the other, or even a perception of them being "unreal" (that's what i have sometimes).

Coming to the point, perhaps that idea of absolute free speech just doesn't work in such an environment? It might work in a setting where people can meet and learn to know each other personally, but in a text-only setting there is little that would naturally (neurologically) make them interact in a respectful way.
Hope it's understandable what i mean.

Same to you. And I wish that one day, you'll stop being influenced by hateful disinformation that only profits those who want you angry. I'm persuaded there's good in you.

We all have our own truth, trying to understand each other is what is important at least in my mind. I wish you the best of luck in all that you do. I pray God blesses you with good health and a life of joy. Take care and have a great weekend.

Believe me, I understand that our differences comes from our life experience and upbringing among other things. And I don't expect nor ask you to stop leaning right; there's many right leaning people that I respect, my late head of section from graduate first ("lift yourself by the bootstraps" kind of guy, strong views on wedding, immigration, etc... but nevertheless a consistent and actually respectful person, even of things he didn't understand). However, it does anger me to see someone fall prey to a brand of populism that actually goes against their values, given that it profits the elites they're wary of.

But it's not some words on a screen from a complete stranger that'll suddenly change your worldview, that's for sure.

Anyway, a great week-end to you too!
