i think that another one of the sadder take aways from the ukrainian war is that you should never give up your nuclear arsenal once you have them.
Ukraine never had a nuclear arsenal. USSR had nuclear weapons stationed in Ukraine, and Russia became the inheritor state when USSR dissolved.
Would keeping their nukes have prevented US-backed coups in 2004 and 2014? If not, then it’s for the best that they gave them up before the Banderites took power.

Maybe? Whether a country has nukes it could use to retaliate has to be part of the "should we coup/color revolution this country?" calculus.
One might argue that we couped the entire Warsaw Pact.
Nothing to argue, this is what happened. Literally all former warsaw treaty countries, sans Belorussia, had western backed coups.
