Nah, should have kept him for cheap insurance, it's not sunk cost if he's not costing you anything. People also forget he is literally younger than Purdy even though he was drafted the year previous. The kid is young, and has no snaps, he's an absolutely unknown project right now... the same as he was when the Niners thought he was worth 3 firsts. So to turn around and ship him for a 4th is dumb in my opinon. Especially after last year. And that's coming from a Niners fan.

While I do agree that a player of his pedigree who isn’t even out of their rookie contract should be a great insurance policy, he did get beat out by Darnold as the second string. Strictly from a cap perspective, paying a third string quarterback a first round rookie contract is not ideal.

They only saved $940,000 by trading him this year. That's not worth a 4th nor the lack of insurance in my opinion. Pay the $940,000 and have some peace of mind if Purdy goes down. And if another team has a QB injury, and is desperate, then deal him.

Edit: I just watched Lynch's presser after the last game, seems Trey suggested he would like to be traded rather than being #3 and they accommodated that for him. And what Lynch was saying does make sense, the entire knock on Trey has been he needs more reps and experience and he sure as hell wasn't going to do that at #3 on the charts.

What pedigree? They dude has thrown less than 500 passes since high school.

A QB drafted in the first round usually gathers interests from teams until they are completely done. Paxton Lynch and Johnny Manziel are the only QBs drafted in the first round in the past 9 not in the league, and Lynch at least got some tryouts. I’m excluding Haskins from this because he would most likely have stuck around in Pittsburg.

He's not unknown - they've got multiple years of Trey Lance in practice. We don't get to see most of that but the 9ers staff do and they've decided he's not good enough to start.

It is costing them millions of dollars a year. Trading him opens up that cap money for other players.

It's not, it would cost them $940,000 this year to keep him. Should have kept him for that, and then if an injury happens to us at QB we are still okay and if an injury happens on another team and they are desperate for a QB we can get more than a 4th... a 4th after trading away 3 firsts is fucking atrocious.
