microblogging is something used on a much more personal level while i think forum style social media is mostly for looking for answers and posting things you do, but microblogging social media sites are for that too. also, this is not meant to be offensive, but i think that since mastodon has been in the works for like a long time, it looks more polished than modern websites, so that can be an advantage it has

i get both mastodon and lemmy in my tl. for me it can kind of be summarized to:

if it comes from lemmy, i know what but not who
if it comes from mastodon, i know who but not what

IME it boils down to "how you populate your tl": by following interesting people or topics (the latter tends to be easier while starting because you know nobody)

i think seeing the two as "orthogonal" is a loss for everyone: i benefit from my timeline being a mix of both topics and people.
