I am confused. Why hasn’t mastodon capitalized on this yet? With the drama of reddit and hype around lemmy shouldn’t we see some fanfare for mastodon and other open source alternatives too? Meanwhile a meta-affiliated product logs 5 million users on launch day.

Mastodon and lemmy can't handle load like that, don't have apps that are that good yet, and it's very confusing for new people coming in since the whole fediverse thing isn't explained all that well.

People are also forgetting that every person with an Instagram account can instantly turn it into a Threads account, bypassing the need to set up anything new.
