tl;dr from the article:

  • The Google Pixel 6 and 7 had connectivity issues due to an outdated and power-hungry Exynos modem, and it seems that the Pixel 8 is facing the same problems.
  • Pixel 8 owners are reporting excessive battery drain, overheating, and poor connectivity when using mobile data, while Wi-Fi usage seems to be fine.
  • Updating the modem's firmware could potentially fix the power consumption issues, but previous Pixel phones with similar problems did not see significant improvements, so don't expect a complete resolution. Snapdragon-powered Android phones offer better baseband and connectivity features for those who heavily rely on mobile data.

Are you facing similar issues? Since they cite the Exynos as a root cause for this, the only overheating I sometimes witness with my Pixel 7a is when I share my internet connection by hotspot but other than that, the battery life has been good since the Android 14 beta.

I've actually noticed that last night while at a party, that even with battery saver on, my phone drained from ~40% to dead over like 6 hours, even after I closed all apps. Very disappointing. Hopefully this can be fixed in an update or something.
