MODERATORS

So I have intermittently played factorio. Scraped through a vanilla playthrough a while back and just did a more serious playthrough recently. I would like to move into using more mods, getting better at using trains and such. Are there any recommended mods for where I'm at to be able to keep moving forward without jumping to far into the deep end of complexity too fast and losing interest?

Rampant

It doesn't really add much complexity, all it adds is suffering and pain (my last 6 games have lasted around 12 hours before my defences get completely overrun and i'm forced to start over)

But it all depends on what you want to do really, logistic train network LTN is a mod that lets you build a train network that works almost like logistic bots, that can be quite interesting to play with, and makes building megabases centered around trains much more manageable

Oh the train one will help immensely. The lack of an ability to make them intelligent( for instance sending a train to a specific stop if a certain item gets low or the train is empty) can be very frustrating. I swear my last playthrough I died more to my own trains running me over than I ever did to the enemies lol.

Bonus tip, there is a dedicated LTN Combinator mod which gives you a prepackaged way to configure LTN stops.

Part of me feels like if I use that I'm cheating lol.

You call it cheating

I call it efficient use of tools acquired. And isn't that at the heart of Factorio?

Fair point. No offense intended by my comment.
