While the very first joysticks probably used serial ports. Common joysticks used a separate port that had less pins.
I had the pin number right, but the port needed to be the other gender, at least for my Gravis gamepad.

Yeah... I had one of those too... Definitely 9 pin serial.
What's pictured in the OP is almost certainly CGA / EGA and not serial though.
