So is that actually what ADHD is like? When I was a kid (middle school or so), I got diagnosed with ADD, and I'm still not certain I know the differences between the two.

I do however, know that I've frequently discribed my train of thought as multiple trains, on multiple tracks, all swapping places and directions at seemingly random intervals. I can't ever follow just one train at at time (if any at all) to its destination.

I'm guessing you were diagnosed in the 80s or 90s because ADD is the same thing as ADHD, they just changed the name. Sometimes I've heard people use ADD for the primarily inattentive type of ADHD (as in the space cadet rather than hyperactive variety), but I don't think that distinction has ever been used clinically.

ADD and ADHD are essentially the same thing apart from the hyperactivity . The H is for hyperactivity, which doesn’t always describe every person with ADD.

And at least in the US ADD is no longer a thing and hasn't been for a while, having been subsumed into the ADHD diagnosis, which can be inattentive, hyperactive, or combined.
