it's a thin flat rubber piece. It seemed like it was seated properly. I think it's supposed to release pressure when the filter clogs. Ordering a new filter tonight to test this hypothesis.
I agree that it seems engineered to leak at that position - for whatever reason. I would assume that a clogged filter would just result in a low flow rate, but who knows how they design that and how high your water pressure is.
