I think so far this is what people wanted: end the status quo and apply shock therapy.

His supporters hope that in the long run the economy will become independent and the country would come out of the never ending crisis. My guess is that everything will simply end up owned by private interests and while (best case scenario) the economy will do better, people will suffer even more.

The Argentinian economy will not do better, only the wealth of the neocolonial compradors will, and the wealth of their Global North capitalist masters.

[–] ExLisper@linux.community 27 points 10 months ago

That's what I meant, it will do better "on paper".

ugh welcome to earth where the only way to have a healthy "economy" is for people to suffer. but we cant seem to just live in peace and help eachother out without monetary benefits. so people are forced to suffer because of greedy bastards.

LETS GO WE NAILED IT GUYS

Yeah, because Friedman's free market shock doctrine shit just isn't working.

Free market regulating itself is the next bullshit argument

There is no such thing as an independent economy without a population of hundreds of millions of highly educated individuals. Countries specialize so they can produce what they're good at for cheaper than if one country made a little of everything.

That said, Diapers and Gasoline are terrible examples to use. The companies behind those can charge as high as they want and are notorious for doing so.

Independent as in not controlled by the USA.

Milei wants to adopt USD as the national currency, so you're definitely 100% wrong with that statement.

Historically, most conservative parties of Argentina were installed by the USA. Notably, the 1976 Coup had them meeting directly with Henry Kissinger, and there are lots of conversations about former POTUS Trump potentially meddling in the election that installed Milei.

You missed the part where I said it's what his supporters hope for. I'm not saying he will actually do it or even try to do it. People there think the country is controlled by the USA and want this to change. They also see adopting USD as a quick way to lower inflation. Yes, it's not realistic but people don't know that so they still voted for him.

You missed the part where his supporters have absolutely nothing to do with this post or comment thread.

Sorry, I though it's the people that elect presidents in elections. My bad.

They privatized many of the highways and you have to pass through toll booths every so often as ownership changes. These people provide no service, there are just taking the money. Same with much of the transit—many buses and trains are privately (mafia) owned.
