It’s an anxiety management technique. I interpret it as meaning she’s too busy struggling with her own issues to be a 100% responsive friend. I can relate.
I just searched it, and it's basically the "5-4-3-2-1 technique of stopping a panic attack".
It's an anxiety coping technique.
