That’s the second time in 24 hours I’ve seen “Ethernet splitter”, is that a thing now? What does it refer to? A hub? A switch? Either? Something else?

Is this a joke? You can literally just splice together some Ethernet cables and all the devices will work unless there’s some specific configuration on the router to prevent that.

Well maybe not, seems like CSMA/CD (used for the above mentioned connectivity) is not as commonly implemented as it once was.
For $2 more he could have had a 5 port gigabit switch. I don't know what their use case was for that abomination.
