Based on a true story for the most part. I honestly can't remember how much they changed. It's been a long time since I read about the real story.

Very changed. And, worse, whitewashed. The original man was Iranian. The was a French film made about the situation too. A white man played him in that movie as well. Plus, it was a comedy.
