Sure, it's a cool feature to have. Just like why does it matter.
I would also like to mention it is a Nintendo thing, not a pokemon thing.
What other Nintendo games do you add gender to your character? I've never played animal crossing but every Nintendo game I've played other than Pokemon has a known protagonist. The screenshot you used is another pokemon game.

Their point with the screenshot is that you can change your gender at will in at least one Pokémon game.
