Calzones are prior art. Also from the article:

A patent examiner, at one point, told his attorney that “it sort of infringes on an apple turnover or a ravioli,” Mongiello said.

While I don't think this is something that should be able to have a patent, Pizza Hut was a jerk about it by turning him down and then releasing the thing he offered to partner with them on.
