Just made a recent discovery and thought we might want to discuss in here. Copied from my other comment here
Also holy shit, you just made me realize that third party platforms don't seem to be tracking the active users on Lemmy accurately. Either that or kbin is defining an active user very generously and Lemmy is being more strict.

See how kbin and lemmy.world have nearly identical trajectories? Lemmy.world actually has significantly more posts and comments. However, lemmy.world only shows like 12k active users and kbin shows all 42k of it's users as active.
This is a vital issue to get to the bottom of, because the narrative from reddit is going to be that Lemmy's userbase is all bots. And then you go to a page like this and it does look pretty bad.

If kbin is overcounting active users, we can leave that for later ๐ . But if Lemmy is undercounting, we need to fix that ASAP so that people don't think it's a ghost town.
That's interesting ๐ค I wonder if something about the federated nature makes active users difficult to count accurately. I wouldn't say that Lemmy is a ghost town but there isn't as much participation as their could be. I'm not even sure how the stats define active to be honest. So there is a lot of unknowns about how that calculation is done.
Hopefully participation will increase as the software improves. Totally understandable if people are frustrated by the current state of the platform and not really participating too much, but hopefully they are still lurking around, ready to jump in when things are patched up.
Sh.itjust.works is one of the more active instances for its size, but we can do even better.
So yeah I just want to show what I am talking about something is completely weird. So if you are on a sh.itjust.works instance and view a community outside this one you see this :
Now here is the same block not logged into an instance:
See the stats are completely different. This is maddeningly confusing. They need to fix the stats overall. I am not sure that any place collecting stats could be right at this point.
Yeah, it's been that way the whole time. What you unfortunately need to do is use a third party tool to find/examine communities. Then join the ones you want and ignore the stats at the top because they're dead wrong.

Btw y'all newbies have it easy, back in my day (2 weeks ago), we had to use this one
https://browse.feddit.de/
Which is fine but you can see how things are improving rapidly.
To clarify your concerns, I don't believe the issue is with the local tracking of stats, but rather with the stats getting uploaded from each server to the rest of the fediverse. If you check our local communities, the stats all seem accurate, at least for me.
lol I like how "back in the day" was two weeks ago LMAO
I aim to please
