Context (warning: it's the Express):

BBC fans have been left divided over the new series of Doctor Who, with some loyal viewers branding the show as "woke" and "unwatchable." The 14th season of the long-running fantasy series returned to our screens this month.

...

Following its return, fans watching at home have reacted online to the new series. One person slammed: "After the cast and crew told the old #DoctorWho fans to stop watching in favour of the 'modern audience', the current season's 2-episode premiere received the lowest overnight ratings in the show's HISTORY!!! #RIPDoctorWho."

A second person chimed in: "#RIPDoctorWho Wow. Well Dr Who is totally unwatchable now. Maybe have a Dr Who series again instead of a platform for gender politics and radical left wing ideology? Go woke go broke."

A third person also commented on X: "The Maestro was probably one of the worst things I've ever seen. No exaggeration. #RIPDoctorWho."

"Actually" (Whovian mode engaged)

Season 14 started in 1976 with Tom Baker in The Masque of Mandragora. Original Doctor Who was always "Seasons". The 2005 reboot switched to calling them "Series" presumably to avoid confusion. Of course, this series is back to "Season 1" because reasons. Basically the article is all wrong.

Glad to know I'm not the only one confused by Doctor Who now having three entries on iPlayer. I haven't watched the show since the end of Matt Smith, so I thought it might've got a full reboot, but after starting the first episode it was clearly a continuation.

(Also, why does the Doctor keep saying he's adopted? He says it like he's not actually from Gallifray, which is not how I remember it.)

You need to watch the Jodie Whittaker run to get that whole storyline. I dropped off halfway through Capaldi and only went back (completely spoiler free so no expectations) last year to watch his last season plus Jodie. I'd recommend doing a catch-up actually... I really enjoyed about 75% of it, although some episodes (non story arc ones) are proper clunkers. Some fans got quite riled up over the main Jodie story arc and wanted RTD to retcon it all, but he seems to be really leaning into it.

Honestly that's the only offensive part of this production. You don't get to pull "season one" out of your ass, fourteen years into the reboot of a show that's sixty years old.
