I think the simplest answer that any movement, once it gets large enough, will eventually end up with a critical mass of idiots that are capable of and willing to do something like this. Then there's the conspiracy nut part of my brain that thinks it possible there are groups of people that do this shit that are paid by the opposition to discredit the movement at large. Take your pick.
