When we see these generic gun-shaped/sword shaped ships, only then we can appreciate how bonkers the USS Enterprise (no bloddy suffixes) must have looked like when she first appeared.
Oh yeah, and it established a very clear design language for the franchise and the design of federation ships. That we then ignored more and more as time went on.
